New Boots Guide: Boot Fitting, Care & Warranty

Boots are one of the most important purchases you can make. Take a few minutes to read over this guide to get the most enjoyment, comfort, and mileage from your new footwear.

Important: Wear your boots indoors on carpeted areas until you're sure they fit properly. Used footwear cannot be returned for sizing issues. If you're unsure, contact Campmor Customer Service for expert fitting advice.

Boot Fitting Tips

  1. Start with socks. Wear the socks you plan to hike in—either a combo of liner and wool/synthetic socks, or just one pair of modern performance socks.
  2. Check the length. Push toes to the front of the boot and check that your index finger fits behind your heel. Too tight = too small; too loose = too large.
  3. Heel placement. Tap your heel back into the boot and lace it snugly. There should be minimal heel lift (less than 1/4 inch). The boot should feel snug in the ball and ankle area.
  4. Toe check. Walk on a decline or kick gently—your toes should not jam. Slight pressure is fine; sharp discomfort means the boot is likely too short or wide.

Pro Tip: If the boots don’t feel good right out of the box, they won’t feel better on the trail. Comfort is key—return them if they don’t feel right.

Boot Care Instructions

  • Apply the correct waterproofing agent to leather boots when new and periodically afterward. Using the wrong product can damage the leather or stitching.
  • Clean after every trip with lukewarm water and a soft brush or saddle soap.
  • Dry boots at room temperature. Never dry them by direct heat or campfire—this can cause delamination or seam failure.
  • Never store boots wet, and avoid letting them freeze while wet on the trail.
