Embracing Adventure: Liz “SunUp” Jarashow’s Journey Through the Triple Crown
Hello, I’m Liz “SunUp” Jarashow from Fremont, CA. My passions include drawing, painting, scuba diving, and backpacking. I recently accomplished the incredible feat of completing the Triple Crown of Hiking solo, driven by my love for adventure and a desire to tackle this challenge before settling into a career and as climate change impacts our trails.
Navigating Challenges as a Deaf Hiker
Each trail—the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT), Continental Divide Trail (CDT), and Appalachian Trail (AT)—came with its own set of hurdles. Waking up daily to continue hiking despite soreness, fatigue, and harsh weather was daunting. Yet, as a deaf hiker, I faced additional challenges, such as communication barriers and isolation. These experiences have made me more resilient and determined.
Building Connections and Community
The CDT stood out for its tight-knit community, making it easier to connect with fellow hikers. Meeting people who were patient and willing to communicate brought immense joy and support. This journey highlighted the importance of representation and inclusion in outdoor spaces, proving that the trail is for everyone.
Memorable Moments and Overcoming Fears
One of my favorite memories is witnessing a rainbow over a mountain peak after the rain—a reminder of nature's beauty and the rewards of perseverance. While some fears, like uncertainty at night, remain, pushing through them brings a sense of accomplishment.
Inspiring Others
As a deaf hiker, it’s vital to show that anyone can achieve their dreams, regardless of obstacles. Representation matters, and I hope my journey encourages others to pursue their passions. The trail is a powerful teacher, offering lessons in resilience and self-discovery.
What’s Next
I’m excited to embark on the Walker’s Haute Route next. For those seeking inspiration, embrace the challenges of the trail; they lead to growth and unforgettable experiences.
My journey is about more than hiking—it's about empowerment, connection, and inspiring others to blaze their own trails.
