style & performance with every STEP
With winter fast approaching, it’s time to put away those flip flops and sneakers and update your footwear arsenal. Campmor offers women’s cold weather footwear from more than a dozen manufacturers in a variety of styles for both functional and fashionable uses. From bare bones, uninsulated rubber to expedition-ready to rugged beauty, there’s a style for you. So whether you’re hitting the trails or the malls, we can cover your feet in comfort.

Faced with snow, slush and ice, it’s best to leave the high heels at home. Or, at the very least, put them in a bag to don when you arrive at your destination. While almost all women’s footwear has a major style component, it is very important to consider the functional aspects of a shoe too.

Does the boot shaft (the ankle to calf area) extend high enough? Not only will you encounter the occasional puddle, but deep snow can easily get into your boot resulting in cold, wet feet. Is the tongue gusseted? If the tongue is only attached to the boot at its base, it is possible, and likely, that deep water or snow will infiltrate the boot along the tongue sides. A gusseted tongue has extended sides that attach to the boot body, creating one continuous, sealed shaft.

The gold standard for outdoor footwear sole design is Vibram. It is tough, durable and has an aggressive tread pattern and grip. Most hiking boots use a Vibram sole or something very similar. Combined with uppers of leather, plastic, or heavy nylon, and sometimes with a Gore-Tex lining, the boots are constructed to withstand the rigors of hiking, including frequent encounters with trail obstacles like rocks, roots and the challenges of slippery mud, snow and ice.

For daily adventures, boot makers have combined the goals of water-resistance and traction with style and warmth. Be cautious of street wear that does not employ a substantial tread pattern, as smooth soles are prone to slipping on wet or icy surfaces. Leather, suede and nylon are all popular materials for everyday boots. Colors, stitching, lacing, zippers, buttons and faux fur are all common style elements. Many UGG boots use sheepskin to keep your toes toasty. Sorel boots use felt liners to maintain warmth. Foam insulation is also sometimes used by others.  Fake fur is frequently used to form a snow collar.

Socks are an important adjunct to winter footwear. Be sure to choose socks appropriate to your activity. Heavier, insulting socks should be used for cold or wet conditions. Wool and synthetic materials are preferred over cotton which retains moisture and has little value when wet.

Care of your boots is easy. Consult the manufacturer’s instructions for specific guidelines. Suede can be treated with water repellency products and occasional brushing or combing to restore finish. For all materials remove mud as soon as possible to reduce staining and maintain appearance. Before wearing new footwear outdoors, wear them around the house to confirm the fit. Used footwear may void any warranty.

Whatever your winter activities or footwear needs, Campmor is sure to have something for everyone.
