MEN'S CLOTHING
trek, travel and casual for the
ADVENTURER
With garments from over thirty of the industry’s leading manufacturers, Campmor has hundreds of Men’s jackets and vests from which to choose.

Jackets and vests share many of the same attributes, with the exception of sleeves. They fall into two general categories: fashionable or functional. At Campmor, our focus is on functional, although nearly all of our offerings have a style component. In fact, the outdoor style has become so mainstream that its essence can be found in many places where once only fashion mattered. For instance, while reinforced shoulders evolved to withstand the abrasion of backpack straps, the two-tone design has crept into clothing intended as street wear.

When buying a jacket, one should consider its primary use. Do you need just a light jacket to ward off an evening chill or a puffy down parka to insulate you from extreme cold? Will the coat need to protect you from headwinds while biking or heavy snow on the slopes? Does it need to be lightweight and compressible to fit easily into your pack?

Many recreational coats use nylon as a shell material. A nylon shell can perform several roles. Heavier nylons are durable and abrasion resistant, making them especially appropriate for outdoor adventures. The tight weave of this material serves to block wind penetration and is often chemically treated to repel rain. These shells frequently serve as the outer layer to protect an inner waterproof membrane, such as Gore-Tex or other brands. Coats that incorporate a waterproof membrane ‘breathe’, which means user generated body moisture can escape, while preventing outside water droplets from passing through the garment to the wearer. Some jackets are coated on the inside with non-porous treatments to create waterproofness. These coats are not suitable for strenuous activities, however, as perspiration which can’t escape will wet the user from the inside.  A wet body is often a precursor to hypothermia.

Several different materials and technologies can be used in jackets for insulation. Popular ones include goose down and fleece, which work by trapping or containing one’s own body heat, and thermal reflective materials. Down is lightweight and compressible, making it ideal for winter hikes. It is also costly. Down’s fill power, or ‘fluffiness’, is rated on a scale of 300 to 900, the higher the number the higher the quality of the down. Fleece is woven from polyester fibers. It comes in different thicknesses denoted as micro, 100, 200 or 300, with 300 being the thickest. Basic fleeces are porous and allow wind penetration; however, newer fleece variants have been designed with a tighter weave to resist wind infiltration. Thermal reflective technology utilizes a material much like a space blanket to reflect, trap and retain your body heat. Some manufacturer’s offer styles with combinations of these materials and technologies in their garments. Columbia Sportswear, for instance, offers the 3-in-1 line which includes a fleece liner jacket and a waterproof shell jacket to be worn alone or together giving you 3 combination options.

Additional features differentiate jacket and vest styles. Hoods may be integrated or detachable, insulated or not. Different locations of drawstrings may exist to customize the fit. Pocket quantity, placement and closure systems will vary. And there are always color choices too.

Whatever you need for whatever you do, from windbreakers to down coats, biking to skiing and more, Campmor has it.
