Comments about Trek Tents Sixty Second Set-Up Dome 2-3 Person Tent:

I've had this tent for 19+ years, bought. I originally got it for a 6-week solo motorcycle camping trip, because I wanted something quicker to set up / take down daily than the expensive Eureka dome tent I already had. It performed wonderfully. The "2-3 person" size was just right for me + camping & motorcycling gear with plenty of comfort. It's easy to set alone in 1-2 minutes under almost any conditions, incl. near-total darkness, as claimed. It's very robust, and until last month, absolutely nothing ever broke, tore or jammed.
It's been used on 4 continents, for motorcycling, car camping, beach festivals, 4x4 trips, casual camping -- you name it. It's been lent out countless times.
Finally, one of the poles broke last month. I was overjoyed to find out they're still being made, and am buying it again... It cost $120 from Campmor in 1995, so it's effectively even gone down in price.

    Good points:
-- Rainproof if the rain fly is properly set up and the seams are sealed occasionally (I've done it 3-4 times in 19 years, and rain has only penetrated once, after neglecting to seal the seams)

-- The reverse side of the rainfly reflect sunlight so help keep the tent cool

-- Windproof for moderate winds (up to ~30mph gusts). Much above that and the dome shape starts acting as a sail; this is true for most dome tents, so not a fault of this specific tent.

-- Plenty of light and air circulation

    Disadvantages:
-- Not ultra-light in weight, so wouldn't recommend it for serious backpacking.

-- Design: The double door scheme without ground-side zipper is slightly annoying.

-- Could use a couple of additional pockets.

-- The included stakes are too soft and bend in stony ground. Easily fixed for $5 by buying a stronger set.

Definitely get a plastic groundsheet, esp. if you camp on thorny and/or rocky ground.

Comments about Trek Tents Sixty Second Set-Up Dome 2-3 Person Tent:

Have used this for a few years and love it. Goes up super easy and I always stay dry inside. Got hit by a freak storm while camping on the beach this weekend and it was ripped out of the ground by the wind (most tents in camp were either ripped out of the ground or torn apart). Someone many camp sites over grabbed it and tied it to a bench. I retrieved it during a lull and crammed the sandy mess into the back of the car and left camp. Everyone was quite certain it had been destroyed and I would be buying a new tent.

Set it up on the deck the next day. Cleaned lots of sand out of the pole hinges and had to futz with one hinge a bit to get it to work properly, but soon enough it was good as new. The gear inside was even dry - including a cell phone that had been left in the tent pocket! I will be buying a new ground footprint and some longer tent stakes, but am thrilled not to have to buy a new tent. Couldn't be happier with this one.

I will agree with one review that the door zipper design is not the greatest. The outer netting usually ends up in a wadded mess on the ground, but that is a small downside compared to the rest of the tent.

Comments about Trek Tents Sixty Second Set-Up Dome 2-3 Person Tent:

This is a really useful and convenient tent. It is meant to be used as a quick, no-frills shelter for short trips. Definitely easy to set up and take down, packs away nicely and is not too heavy for short hikes. It could use another pouch or two inside the tent and it would be nice if there were a way to attach a vestibule for gear. The only other weakness is that it can be short for taller sleepers (greater than 6 feet). Very fine tent. Glad to have purchased it.

Comments about Trek Tents Sixty Second Set-Up Dome 2-3 Person Tent:

I've used this tent once. When you buy a tent on line, you never really get to see how it works. Most tents have a door and window combination that allows you to unzip both at the same time. For some reason, this tent has a separate door and window in the same space. When opening, it means you need to unzip 2 things to get inside or to get out... leaving extra time for pesky misquitoes or rain to get inside. That was disappointing. It faired well in one night of hard rain. Height is nice compared to lower back pack tents. It really is easy to set up.

              • Q:

I ordered two of these. Previous questions answered here are conflicting. One states the seams need to be sealed. The other states that it needs to be seam sealed and also sprayed with waterproofing. The specifications listed for this tent state, "Fly seams are sealed. Fly, wrap-around floor and lower walls are 2 oz. urethane water repellent coated nylon taffeta. Roof is breathable 2 oz. nylon taffeta." So my question is specifically, which seams do I need to seal and which sections of the tent do I need to spray with waterproofing? thanks.

There is no need to spray a water repellent. The coating is on the fly and floor that keeps the water out of the tent. Both the fly and the floor have taped seams.

The floor will support 2 camping cots. Since the tent is not very tall you would want the cots to be cots that are cloes to the ground to preserve head room.

                1 answer

                • Staff Reviewer

                  A:

                  Remove all stakes
Remove the fly, fold in half and then in half lengthwise and put aside
Undo manual ‘Locking’ mechanism at the top hinge
Reach in the tent, grasp the center hub and pull down
This will let the tent center to drop down and the hinged legs will begin to fold up
Gather the legs and draw them to the center of the tent and compress it ‘in’ on itself as far as you can
Put the tent aside and fold the ground sheet in the same manner as the fly
Lay the tent at one end of the fly, lay the ground cloth on the fly and roll the fly/ground cloth around the tent
                  Put tent in carry bag
Put stakes in stake bag and put in carry bag
                  Zip carry bag shut
                  Move on

                  Notes
Never pack a wet tent if possible
Shake or knock all debris off various tent components before packing
If you packed your tent wet, dry it out –soon
You can let things air dry before you pack up
Entire ‘striking’ process takes about 2 minutes
This was a favorite tent to show in the store because set up and take down are so quick
We have sold this tent for 30 years
                  It works
It was a favorite tent of ‘Smoke Jumpers’ for years.
