pretty darn good

By oldie but goodie

from NH

See all my reviews

Verified Buyer

Pros

  • Easier To Put On Than Som
  • Good On Steep Snowy Slope

Cons

  • Not So Good On Glare Ice

Best Uses

  • Hiking On Snowy Slopes

Comments about Polar-Trax Traction Device:

These were good in the woods in snow not deep enough for snowshoes. They're fairly easy to get on and off. I was sent two left ones, but since I've been told I have two left feet, it worked out just fine. I had trouble crossing an icy brook; they don't seem to bite into ice well.

Great traction, but is sizing correct?

By hiker

from mentor, ohio

Verified Buyer

Pros

  • Don't Fall Off
  • Do Not Fall Off
  • Do Not Fall Off Boots
  • Great traction

Cons

  • Boot Or Runner Sizing
  • Very tight fit

Best Uses

  • Snow and ice

Comments about Polar-Trax Traction Device:

After first pair broke and putting new set over my Keen Targhee hiking boots I thought maybe these were actually sized for runners and not boots which have larger footprint. So maybe the first set broke because I have them overstretched.
The good this is...I don't lose them on the trail!

Polar Trax

By Coaster Brake

from D/FW

Verified Buyer

Pros

  • Appear Well Designed

Cons

  • Mdm Fit Wms Size 9 Tite

Best Uses

  • Slippery Path Hiking

Comments about Polar-Trax Traction Device:

I haven't had a chance to use these much but they seem well-suited for icy worn path and sidewalk use. The medium fits a womens size 9 boot very tightly. A large might work better but then again, it might be a little loose.

Save your money

Comments about Polar-Trax Traction Device:

They just don't keep you from slipping on ice and hard pack snow. So what are they good for? I have no idea.

Good for driveway, NOT trail.

By tbc

from ny, ny

Comments about Polar-Trax Traction Device:

Opted for these to save a few bucks and with the hope that they would take the abuse on the trail. It wasn't so. On the first two hikes they slipped over my heel multiple times (13 size shoe, large sized traction device, the size that was reccomended). On the third hike the wire holding it all together broke on both of them. Good for the driveway, cannot hold up on the trail.

Some of the best ice cleats around

By Dee the paper girl

from Fairmont, WV

Comments about Polar-Trax Traction Device:

These are really good on the ice and snow! We deliver newspapers in the middle of the night and it gets really slippery. These are really good. These really lessen the chances of you slipping on the ice.

Stability problems

By Dr. Science

from Eagan Minnesota

Pros

  • Easy To Mount On Boot
  • Very strong durable

Cons

  • Poor Lateral Stability
  • Poor traction on ice

Best Uses

  • Hiking On Packed Snow

Comments about Polar-Trax Traction Device:

Polar Trax were very easy to mount on boots and seem like they would be extremely durable. Provided good traction on packed snow. Traction on solid hard ice is poor both on a trail or lake surface. Lateral stability is also poor since the traction beads can actually spin on their connecting wire. This makes traversing a slope very treacherous if you are on a solid surface like ice or even bare ground.

I am going to buy more

By The Dog Woman

from Tabernash, CO

Verified Buyer

Comments about Polar-Trax Traction Device:

I have tried many of these type of products. The Polar Trax are great for the following reasons:
I can alternate to deep snow and not worry about losing my Polar Trax. They don't come off until I remove it.

Even if they get iced up they still perform, even in the coldest of weather. (-5')
