Chains broke on first use!

By gloglu

from Fort Lee, NJ

Pros

  • Nice looking

Cons

  • Breaks easily
  • Not reliable

Best Uses

Comments about Yaktrax XTR Extreme Traction Device:

This product was terrible. I used it only once and one of the chains broke and one of my hiking friends had a pair of pliers so I was able to put it together. Further along on the hike, another chain broke on the other shoe and I had to take it off. Finally, on the remaining yaktrax 3 chains broke and I had to take that one off as well. I ended up hiking with no protection in very icy conditions!

    Good not Great!

    By The Hiker

    from Selinsgrove, PA

    Verified Buyer

    Pros

    • Easy on and off
    • Great traction

    Cons

    • Chain not strong enough
    • Made of rubber

    Best Uses

    • Easy hikes

Comments about Yaktrax XTR Extreme Traction Device:

These are nice but not as extreme as the name suggests. I used them in the White Mountains and they did not hold up to that kind of abuse. Should work great for easy hikes.

    Not for hiking

    By Catskill hiker

    Pros

    • Easy to pack

    Cons

    • Durability
    • Quality

    Best Uses

    • Around town at most

Comments about Yaktrax XTR Extreme Traction Device:

On the first hike 2 chains broke. Fixed them with paracord. Next time most of the other ones went. Even one tooth broke right off. This product does not work on any terrain that has a slope to it. Those chains snap under very little load. Do not take these on a hike!
Now use Kahtoola's for the second season and never had any problems.

    They do the job.

Comments about Yaktrax XTR Extreme Traction Device:

Worked great in 6" of Smoky Mountain snow. I ran into two hikers on my return who admired the "bite" of my tracks - they complained of slipping back a few inches on the larger snow covered rocks. Here are the answers to their questions: the XTRs were easy to put on and off; I never felt like they were slipping off; worked great going up and down; I really appreciated them crossing streams.

    So far, so good

    By Kathy McC

    from Garnerville, NY

    Pros

    • Sturdy

    Cons

    • Not for indoor floors

    Best Uses

Comments about Yaktrax XTR Extreme Traction Device:

It was great on snow, and on some icy spots and slushy spots during a snow storm after Christmas in NY. I'm a klutz, and with these on, I felt confident. I'm 285 lbs, and yet felt secure walking on them. Haven't tried them on plain ice, and will take caution should I face ice. Wish they were a tad easier to put on and take off. Actually, wish one could walk on a regular linoleum or smooth building floor with them.
