The back flap aids in keeping your neck from getting burned. Lastly the strap is a big plus as without it the hat would have gone overboard most every time that I wore it.

Comments about Sunday Afternoons Offshore Water Hat: I use this hat surfing and windsurfing and have no complaints. It's adjustable so it fits great, the bill flips up so your vision paddling out is un-obstructed, and the bill is stiff enough to resist wind forces while windsurfing. The chin strap is very comfortable, and I like the long tail in the back which keeps the sun off your neck. All in all, a great hat, which is very well designed.
