What's the difference between black and "TNF black"? Can't tell on my screen. Does it have to do with shininess? Also, is there a little logo or something on the right leg just above knee level? Small white blotch on screen.

  There were 2 blacks by North Face. The North Face black is a richer deeper black with less grey tones than the standard black. The logo is the North Face logo at the knee.

  If you are at the top of a S size range and you intend to layer under these shells, then size up. If this is not the case then you should have a little room to layer.

I am looking for a breathable SOFT shell pant that can be worn when hiking or fast paced walking (not necessarily in the rain) for Fall and Spring---and as a cover over a layer in the winter. I see on another website these are described as having a "hard shell" which is not what I want. Would you describe these as having a soft or hard shell?

  The venture rain pant can be a good choice for high aerobic activity in the snow. I would not use it in off trail or down hill skiing because it is light weight and probably would not stand up to abrasion well. But for cross country skiing and trail snowshoeing these would work great.
