Comments about Outdoor Research DryComp Summit Sack:

I got this pack to replace my day pack.It definitely looks just like a drysack with shoulder straps attached.

It is a huge pack with plenty of volume, and this can be advantageous or work against you. If you don't have enough stuff in it, then it rides kind of low on your back unless you tighten the straps all the way up. If you use the "waist strap" / "compression straps" that are built in to compress it then you don't have any waist straps. To get a little extra compression I bought two generic black webbing straps and just cinch them tight through the daisy loops. This adds some type of "structure" that it doesn't have without. Also the lack of pockets I have sorted most of my gear into stuff sacks or dry sacks, which must be packed in with care. If not there could be water bottles or something jabbing me in the back. Also I notice that when i need something it always happens to be at the bottom, and I just wind up dumping the whole thing out to find it.

The shoulder straps could use more padding, I can understand minimalist or lightweight, but without a heavy coat on this will start wear at your shoulders after 6 or 7 miles. Especially if you have enough of a load in the pack to fill it up entirely. Also the lack of sternum strap/waist belt means that all of the weight is on one spot the whole time.

Despite some of it's downfalls in lacking straps it is a nice pack so far. I haven't tested it by jumping in a river, though I plan to this summer and see if it keeps me afloat. I have snowshoed with it and it is profoundly superior to my previous pack which was not water proof. i don't have to mind what is inside, or if it's going to get wet or not.

There is no sternum strap and adding one of these might help to balance the load out from the shoulders a bit. I plan to purchase the ala carte strap that OR sells, which looks like it was made for this pack.

I would give it 5 stars if the shoulders straps had more padding, and there were proper sternum/compression straps.

needs to be a photo of the back

Comments about Outdoor Research DryComp Summit Sack:

Ordered this believing it was a standard daypack. Once I received it, was surprised to find that there was absolutely NO frame, support, or padding on the back. Is basically a dry bag with shoulder straps. Went back to read the description again, after seeing it I then understood exactly what it was.
If you need a dry bag with shoulder straps, this is the one to get though!!!

Comments about Outdoor Research DryComp Summit Sack:

Love this multipurpose summit sack. Unlike lots of other sacks that I looked at before buying this one, this bag has lots of ways to strap on gear on the outside of the bag (like pickets and wands). The bag is waterproof so I often pack it inside my backpack with my sleeping bag, puffy & food inside - then take it out as a summit sack. My only complaint is that it doesn't compress very small. If you are looking for a bag that will really work as a compression sack then is isn't really what you want. It'll get relatively smaller, but if I really need to save on space then I will put my sleeping bag in a really lightweight actual compression sack and put this inside my OR Summit Sack to keep dry. On more than one occasion I have also used this bag as my food bag to hang up from a tree at night - keeps things dry and out of reach of the critters.

Comments about Outdoor Research DryComp Summit Sack:

I was skeptical at first, but this product was definitely designed to fit a void in the marketplace. I was completely satisfied. If you have done any research or read the reviews, you will hear complaints about the shoulder straps. This is true. The straps are a little timid but do offer function to get the job done. I would completely purchase again if I needed another one. My uses were wet Alaska day hikes and short overnights, as well as a couple ATV trips.

Comments about Outdoor Research DryComp Summit Sack:

I used this for 14 days in Alaska this summer, which was about the wettest on record. The bag handled overnight emergency gear, 2 liters of water, and a digital SLR with long lens and performed fine. The compression straps double as a waist belt for hiking. About the only feature a person could want can be taken care of with the addition of a sternum strap. Otherwise, it's darn near perfect.

Comments about Outdoor Research DryComp Summit Sack:

I spent a week in the very wet Alaskan backcountry and everything stayed dry even while waiting for hours in the rain for float plane pickup. It doesn't come wiht a sternum strap, but one can easily be added when carrying heavier items like cameras and lens.

I'm confused... Do you lose the use of the shoulder straps when you use the bag as a compressor? I do alot of kayaking and won't always be filling the bag to full capacity so I want to compress it and still be able to wear it as a backpack.

                A:

Yes the shoulder straps are used also for the compression straps so you can not fully compress the bag an duse the shoulder straps at the same time.

                A:

I would not exceed 15 pounds. There is no frame and it is just a stuff sac that can convert to a pack.
