Comments about Outdoor Products Mantis Dragonfly External Frame Pack:

Bought two of these for 9 and 10 year old boys. First trip one of the frames cracked at the base. I secured it with an 8" plastic tie and it's made 4 or 5 more trips since then with no problems. I recommended this to a friend and he got one for his son as well. Just keep some plastic ties on hand for when the frame cracks, because it will. These work great for the kids to pack their own sleeping bags, ridge rests, water, clothes and food. Side pockets perfectly fit 32 oz Nalgene bottles. (Make sure to buy a couple of 36" or longer nylon straps as well, to strap the sleeping bag to the external frame.) My 9 year old carries about 15 pounds, and my 10 year old 20+ pounds with these packs. Can't beat these packs for the price, for entry level kids backpacking.

Comments about Outdoor Products Mantis Dragonfly External Frame Pack:

Very easy to wear all day very light weight- and if it needsw adjusting for size, just as easy. I bought it mainly as a bob for its cheap price. But to be honest I may pick up another for for regular backpaking trips. As for the cos, internal space is basically a huge opening with one flap that devides it in the center to make "2" different packing areas. Would like more internal space organization. As well as it lacks no belt pockets. But hey at this price point you can have everything. And it is external making it slightly modular.
Overall I would def recomend this bag.

Comments about Outdoor Products Mantis Dragonfly External Frame Pack:

Bought this for my son who is old enough to start carrying his own gear to the campsite. This is a good starter pack (low cost, good quality, light weight). It's a smaller pack than what I'm used to, but that's good because you don't want to overload a boy. A big pack invites him to pack everything he can imagine which will weigh too much. The one thing I don't like is that the main compartment is divided into to two section which makes carrying rolled up sleep mats an issue (I think there was small holes in the divider so you can carry tent poles, etc.) Still knowing that in a few years, he'll get bigger and want a bigger pack, this is a good first choice.

Comments about Outdoor Products Mantis Dragonfly External Frame Pack:

Wanted a economical external frame pack to replace my internal frame pack for hiking. This fit the bill. The pack was comfortable and easily adjustable. the only negative was the bottom frame cracked on a hike. Campmor was very accomadating in replacing with a new one. All in all a very good pack for the price.

                    A:

When determining what size pack to buy, how tall you are is not nearly as important as your torso length. A short-legged person and a long-legged person may be exactly the same height, but require different sized packs.

To measure your torso length, you will need some assistance and a flexible measuring device like a tailor's tape. Have a friend measure along your spine from the seventh vertebra (the bump where your shoulder meets the neck) down to a point even with the iliac crest (the top of the hip-bones). The distance along your spine between those two points is your torso length.

When measuring for hipbelts, it is important to measure not the waist or where your pants ride, but in the center of your hipbone (1/2 inch below the top of the hips) where the hipbelt should be worn.

You can insert a hydration reservoir into the pack. It could use up to a 100 oz reservoir. This pack just is hydration ready so there is no outlet port for the tube or specific sleeve for the reservoir. You would have to gerry rig the tube through the zippered opening of the pack and you might get some condensation around the reservoir which may affect other items in your pack.
