Comments about Kelty Yukon 50 External Frame Pack:

Bought for our grandson, 12 and a Boy Scout. He had instructions from his Scout Master on what to buy and this fit the bill. I told him that it will carry more gear than he needs but he'll learn after overpacking once! Impressed with the size and all the adjustments possible!

Comments about Kelty Yukon 50 External Frame Pack:

I just used this backpack for a 2-week trip through the Amazon and to Roraima in Venezuela. I was surprised by how much room it has. It's absolutely easy to load and I love all the pockets. The weight feels distributed really well, making the backpack extremely comfortable to wear on long hikes. I would have put rubber stoppers at the bottom of the frame so it would stand up more easily against a wall. It'd also be nice if it had some sort of straps under the compartments to attach a sleeping bag.

Much more comfortable than the internal frame packs that I have used. I like the added comfort although I do notice a slight loss of freedom of maneuver. But, I'm used to it now and this pack is great. I can carry a bigger load more in comfort. I'm kind of a slow and steady hiker and this pack works great for that kind of travel. I stick to paths and trails too.

Good value for outfitting your "Clan". We have 8 to outfit and this fit the bill for high value but not high end.

We've had a couple of similar and am sorry the Tioga III is no longer made, this is the next best.

                                  A:

The best way to determine fit in a pack is through measuring your torso lenth. Use the following process to determine your torso length:
Have a friend measure your back. Stand with your back to them and your hands on your hips like you are scolding someone. Your thumbs will point to a stop on your lower spine. Start from this point and measure up to the C-7 vertebrae, which is the one that sticks out of the back of your neck when you touch your chin to your chest. The measurement between these 2 points is your torso length.
The torso length for the Yukon is-16" - 21"

External is a good choice for heavy loads on trails. Internal frames are best for colder weather and offer a closer center of gravity for uneven terrain. Both have their merits.

Which rain cover would work best with this? My son also attaches the thermarest pad to the bottom of the pack which adds a little to the width.

I haven't been able to get torso length but it's a gift and I want to order now.

                                Thanks very much!

The belt on the Yukon will open to 45" so it should accommodate your 14-15 year old. Whether this fits length wise is a function of torso length. The torso length for this pack is 16"-21".. Just measure him by: Have a friend measure your back.
