Comments about Kelty Yukon 50 External Frame Pack:

On the small side for winter backpacking. Lacks load lifter straps. Sleeping bag compartment is perminent, no way to seperate to make one big bag. However, this pack uses quality materials and is very nice looking, great color(Cypress is olive drab). External frame is fabulous for lashing bulky itms. Just not enough pack space for my needs. Will fit a tall adult and is fine for short trips in the summer or maybe a winter overnighter.

Bought for our grandson, 12 and a Boy Scout. He had instructions from his Scout Master on what to buy and this fit the bill. I told him that it will carry more gear than he needs but he'll learn after overpacking once! Impressed with the size and all the adjustments possible!

The best way to determine fit in a pack is through measuring your torso lenth. Use the following process to determine your torso length:
Have a friend measure your back. Stand with your back to them and your hands on your hips like you are scolding someone. Your thumbs will point to a stop on your lower spine. Start from this point and measure up to the C-7 vertebrae, which is the one that sticks out of the back of your neck when you touch your chin to your chest. The measurement between these 2 points is your torso length.
The torso length for the Yukon is-16" - 21"

External is a good choice for heavy loads on trails. Internal frames are best for colder weather and offer a closer center of gravity for uneven terrain. Both have their merits.

The belt on the Yukon will open to 45" so it should accommodate your 14-15 year old. Whether this fits length wise is a function of torso length. The torso length for this pack is 16"-21".. Just measure him by: Have a friend measure your back. Stand with your back to them and your hands on your hips like you are scolding someone. Your thumbs will point to a stop on your lower spine. Start from this point and measure up to the C-7 vertebrae, which is the one that sticks out of the back of your neck when you touch your chin to your chest. A:

Have a friend measure your back. Stand with your back to them and your hands on your hips like you are scolding someone. Your thumbs will point to a stop on your lower spine. Start from this point and measure up to the C-7 vertebrae, which is the one that sticks out of the back of your neck when you touch your chin to your chest. The measurement between these 2 points is your torso length.
