Loaded with 2# Northface bag,Klymit air mattress, Big Agnes seedhouse 1 tent,MSR Pocket Rocket, Coleman Backpack pot,Monarch chair,3 days food, clothes. 30+ mile trip in 3 days 2 nights (800ft. to 1200ft., lots of hills). Great Pack - a little complicated

Comments about Osprey Kestral 68 Internal Frame Pack:

This is my first new pack in a long time (I had an Alpine Designs if anyone remembers those). This pack is plenty big. I have a lot of the large size Big Agnes stuff and it all fits fine with room for stove, clothes, tomahawk etc.

The only thing to watch out for is that the pack is rocket science. For example, the shoulder straps have top and bottom adjusters. I couldn't get the fit right until I figured that out. There are lots of ties, clips etc that take some time to figure out. You will want to practice loading this and take a couple of hikes to get it dialed in.

Gear I packed in my 68 without forcing anything: Army Ranger 3 season bag, Big Agnes Lynx Pass 3 tent, Big Agnes Air Core (big and wide version), Snowpeak cook set with nested stove, compression sack full of clothes...and all the other little gear. I am pretty sure I will be able to get a bear canister in it too.

Comments about Osprey Kestral 68 Internal Frame Pack:

I hadn't been overnight back packing for some years. My tripping has been by canoe, and in a canoe it is easy to haul too much along. It took me some effort to fit my gear to the dimensions of a 68 liter pack, but the results were worthwhile. The pack was comfortable and carried well with about 36 lbs onboard. This is a well designed pack with lots of adjustments.

Comments about Osprey Kestral 68 Internal Frame Pack:

I have only carried this pack for about 75 miles. It has performed flawlessly in the short time I have used it. I think it is well thought out and has everything I have been looking for. How could you go wrong with the warrantee given? I rarely give out 5s on any reviews but I do not have one complaints so five it is.

Any suggestions about how to pack a tent in this? I purchased both a Big Anges Lynx Pass 3 and the Kestrel 68 from you and am gearing up for a big trip. Alas, my warmup got rained out. Are the side pockets a good place for the poles?

            A:

The side wand pockets are a great place to put the frame. Just make sure that the compression straps are well secured. You do not want to loose your frame. I would also suggest that you pack the tent body and fly last; It is my experience from many hikes in torrential rains, pack the tent body on top of all the other items in the pack and then the fly. This make a very water tight seal at the top of this top load pack.

          The specifications say:

          Capacity:
          M-L 4028 cu in.
          S-M 4150 cu in.

Isn't this reversed? It seems that the smaller pack would have the smaller capacity. Can you give me some idea in concrete terms (perhaps the size of some object) the difference in size? I'd order the larger pack if you had it in stock.

A hydration sleeve is included on the Kestral 68. The sleeve is on the outside of the pack bag and behind the frame. This makes for easier removal of the reservoir.

            A:

This is a men's pack. The only women's specific pack is the Osprey Women's Aura 65 Internal Frame Pack
That said as long as the torso length is within the range for you and the hip belt is not too big for you a Kestral 68 may work. The woman's has a woman's belt and shoulder harness.
