I compared four whistles and rated them by apparent loudness, how much force was required to blow, does it work if wet (in the water), and form factor.

Incredibly loud - hurt my ears (blew it outside, not in an enclosed space).
Easily the loudest BY FAR.
Loud enough to get attention even if blown lightly - important for kids
(If you just breath lightly through this whistle it is as loud as some others)
Best bet to be heard over boat motors, shouting, waves, wind etc.
Less compact than other designs but easily the winner for marine activities or diving (works under water).
Downside is it is bulkier, wouldn't necessarily want to carry for non-marine use

Pretty darned loud (comparable or louder than hard blow on "classic")
Loud enough to get attention even if blown lightly - important for kids
Distinct 2 tone sound (sounds like a train whistle) doesn't sound like a "sports whistle" so it will stand out.
Nice flat design easy to tuck into PFD
Pea-less design works in water.

Classic pea whistle. Like what any coach would use.
Very loud, but I suppose it doesn't work well in the water.
Needs harder blow to get good strong sound.

Absolutely horrible. Even blowing hard didn't generate enough sound.
Regular "coach's whistle" much louder.

Want a whistle to be heard? This is the one. Simple, plastic, loud. All you need in the out-of-doors.

Compact, hi viz color, but not as loud as expected. No lanyard or split ring. Can be clipped on, but if you want to wear it on a lanyard the hole for threading a lanyard though does not work with split rings, clips, etc.

Always bring something like this...survival is key and no one is going to hear you yelling for help.Light and loud...great price, effective for intended purpose.
