Pros Cons Best Uses Comments about Optimus Svea 123R Backpacking Stove: I used an older model in 1982, stored it in my parents basement.30 years later ,with the same fuel still in it.....she fired right up!

Comments about Optimus Svea 123R Backpacking Stove: Used this stove last weekend in the Loyalsock Trail when the temp was in the teens. Worked great with very little fuel consumed

Comments about Optimus Svea 123R Backpacking Stove: touch heavy but feels solid because its made with brass. New one worked out of box without flareup; previous experience is 8R stove from 80's. Fits in Terra pot kit with little room maybe for a Ti 900? Can use a 700 for a cup and store away the small aluminium cup it comes with. Used alcohol to prime it; gas ok but smokey, maybe ok with fire paste since its alcohol based. During snow survival school the butane stoves didn't ignite, my 8R worked fine; other white gas units worked fine. I expect nothing less from this one.

Comments about Optimus Svea 123R Backpacking Stove: I have stoves that I think perform better, but this is the tank. It has fewer parts to loose are break. It will work when the other stoves wont. This stove will make next float trip I take in northern Alaska

Comments about Optimus Svea 123R Backpacking Stove: My husband owned a Svea backpacking stove back in the early 80s. He was very impressed with how light & compact it was. He has brought it to Nova Scotia for backpacking trips. So far, it hasn't failed him. Unfortunately, he lent his old Svea stove to a friend and never got it back. I ordered this recently and he said that it was similar to his old stove. It looks like we will be getting our money's worth. Can't wait to use it on our next backpacking trip.

Comments about Optimus Svea 123R Backpacking Stove: September of 1975 is when I bought this stove and have used it on and off for 37 years. It has never failed. Great high altitude burner and gives a beautiful glow. Was on a trip in the Sawtooth wilderness with 4 others when their new stove broke. I had the Svea tucked in my pack even after I was told to leave it in the car. It cooked for 5 people on a 4 day trip. Flawless. Have never seen another stove that comes close. Too many connections on other stoves. It can be unstable due to its size but you have to adjust. Just try one.

Comments about Optimus Svea 123R Backpacking Stove: This is the ONLY stove any serious backpacker should own. I bought mine 38 years ago (not exaggerating) and have never done any maintenance or had any problem with this stove. I've used it in near zero weather many times and it has never failed to light and has always provided a solid / hot flame. I particularly like the fact it lacks the tubes and hoses that newer stoves use that have the potential to break / become disconnected. Buy one of the spouted tops for your fuel bottle for easy filling and you're set.

What size is the lid/pot?1 answer
A:

how well does the stove work3 answers
A:
You could have this stove drop out of your pack, fall down a rock face, get hit by every rock on that face, find it on your return hike and still cook lunch on it.A:
Works very well. An expedition stove that is used for mountaineering and backpacking trips.A:
I have one that is almost 40 years old and I have never had a problem with it. It is very reliable and easy to use. It is small (an advantage if backpacking), but it does limit the size of the pots/pans you can use. It is not something you would want to use to cook for a group of people, but it is perfect for individual use. Highly recommended.Q:
Where can I get repair parts, specifically a replacement wick?3 answers
A:
This stove doesn't use a wick. The tank is preheated by burning a small amount of fuel or fire paste type product in a reservoir area at the base of the stem. The brass colored windscreen portion of the stove is removable. Within a minute or so the priming fuel or solvent is burned off and the tank is heated enough that vapors will come through the stove head when you turn the stove on. There are after-market pumps made for the SVEA 123 stove if you don.t like the open flame method. As the tank/stove gets hotter the flame gets more like a home stove. These stoves virtually never need any parts. There are people on the net that talk about having this stove for 30 years with the last 10 years sitting and they start up and work great. These stoves even have a nozzle cleaner built in, When the gas is turned off the needle pops through the nozzle clearing it if any carbons or soot.A:

You could go buy a cotton mop head and have enough wicks for centuries. Make sure the mop head is all cotton. (usually if there are multiple styles this will be the cheaper one.Q:
Where is the fuel housed in this stove? At the bottom?2 answers
A:
yes, there is a reservoir at the bottom of the stove.A:

I know that Optimus has been bought out by Katadyn and that the Svea 123R is no longer made in Sweden. QUESTION: Where is the Svea 123R now manufactured?1 answer
A:
They are now made in TaiwanQ:
Can you burn unleaded fuel in the Svea. I was given an old swiss model a few years ago and dearly love it.2 answers
A:
White gas is the preferred type of fuel for this item, however you can use a high octane auto fuel. However the higher octane auto fuel will eventually clog the jet and generator after extended use. The manufacturer does not suggest using auto fuel but it can be done in an emergency.VERIFIED BUYER
