The only water filter adjustable for different conditions. It combines the two best technologies, ceramic and pleated microfiltration. This two filter system combines the benefit of easy operation with high water output and extended cartridge life. In dirty water conditions, a ceramic disk protects the primary filter. In normal water, it is easily adjustable to provide maximum water output.
  • Microfiltration method includes cleanable ceramic disk which lengthens the life of the primary microfilter.
  • 0.3 Micron high surface area, pleated glass fiber microfilter removes waterborne bacteria and cysts.
  • Fast flow mode filters clean water with ceramic filter disengaged.
  • Output in fast flow mode up to 2 quarts per minute (2 liters per minute).
  • Output in longer life mode with ceramic filter produces 1 quart per minute.
  • Replaceable carbon core reduces chemicals, pesticides and bad taste in water.
  • Attaches to standard wide mouth bottles.
  • Cartridge Capacity: Up to 500 gallons (1875 liters).
  • Includes 2 bags, replaceable carbon prefilter, deluxe carry bag and cleaning pad.
  • Wt. 1 lb. 1 oz.
  • Size: 6.5 in. x 3.8 in. x 3 in.

Comments about Katadyn Vario Microfilter:

This filter is fantastic! The brand is top quality and it performs as such. I was truly surprised how much gunk it filtered out of what appeared to be very clean water.
The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because I am a backpacker, and it is a lot heavier and bulkier than my Sawyer squeeze filter is. :(
That said, I needed a pump filter because the mountain we were climbing had few water sources that had fast enough flow to fill a bag in a reasonable time frame.
Also, be aware that if you pump too fast water will leak out the side. I learned this the hard way. Slow, steady pumps, not fast ones!

This has flawlessly sustained water supply for a family of 6 plus some friends for two 7 day backpacking trips plus numerous other 2-3 day trips. The only time the water had a taste was out of Lake Richie on Isle Royale, but other groups had the same "fishy" taste with other filters.

      Comments about Katadyn Vario Microfilter:

I bought the filter to replace an old Pur filter that had failed. I really liked how the Pur put out a lot of water fairly quickly and hoped this would be a good replacement.

I took it on a week long backpacking trip and filtered about 10 or so liters of water a day out of it and it worked great. When it became hard to pump I only had to clean the ceramic filter to get it back to normal operation.

            Comments about Katadyn Vario Microfilter:

The plastic handle developed a large crack in it the first hike I took it on. While the filter was still functional it made me cut my hike short for fear of being without a reliable water source. I sent the filter into campor which they gladly replaced. My second Vario broke before I even had a chance to use it. The plastic inlet barb broke off. I was not happy.

I have been using my filter in the BWCA for 5 years now. Give it a quick clean after each trip, a test run in tap water before each trip. I have not had to replace anything. Threads onto my water canteens. No complaints

Bought this for a scouting trip to Philmont. Worked great to filter water for 11 members of the crew. The ceramic filter clogs easily and must be cleaned frequently. Would recommend it for a fairly large group. Otherwise a smaller Katadyn filter might be preferred to decrease weight.

I use this at least 10 days a year, hiking in the woods, canoeing in the Adirondacks--lots of places where the water is of questionable quality. It's pretty rugged. This was a replacement to the same thing which I've had for 2 or 3 years, and I only had to replace it because I was negligent about replacing the filter.

Took this on a 4 day trip to the BWCA. We had 6 people and two filters. The katadyn and my dads gravity filter. This thing worked great for about 5 minutes and became harder and harder to pump. Even after backflushing and cleaning the ceramic disc several times, it was extremely hard to pump. The resistance from the ceramic filter eventually became so great that the housing itself actually cracked, causing a leak and compromising the entire unit. good thing we brought the extrea filter.

The ceramic is cleaned through scrubbing. There is a spec for the thickness of the ceramic and you would measure this. For the activated charcoal element, it will darken and pumping will become hard.
