Comments about Katadyn Vario Microfilter: This has flawlessly sustained water supply for a family of 6 plus some friends for two 7 day backpacking trips plus numerous other 2-3 day trips. The only time the water had a taste was out of Lake Richie on Isle Royale, but other groups had the same "fishy" taste with other filters.

Comments about Katadyn Vario Microfilter: I bought the filter to replace an old Pur filter that had failed. I really liked how the Pur put out a lot of water fairly quickly and hoped this would be a good replacement.
Pros Cons Best Uses Comments about Katadyn Vario Microfilter: The plastic handle developed a large crack in it the first hike I took it on. While the filter was still functional it made me cut my hike short for fear of being without a reliable water source. I sent the filter into campor which they gladly replaced. My second Vario broke before I even had a chance to use it. The plastic inlet barb broke off. I was not happy.

Comments about Katadyn Vario Microfilter: I have been using my filter in the BWCA for 5 years now. Give it a quick clean after each trip, a test run in tap water before each trip. I have not had to replace anything. Threads onto my water canteens. No complaints

Comments about Katadyn Vario Microfilter: Bought this for a scouting trip to Philmont. Worked great to filter water for 11 members of the crew. The ceramic filter clogs easily and must be cleaned frequently. Would recommend it for a fairly large group. Otherwise a smaller Katadyn filter might be preferred to decrease weight.

Comments about Katadyn Vario Microfilter: I use this at least 10 days a year, hiking in the woods, canoeing in the Adirondacks--lots of places where the water is of questionable quality. It's pretty rugged. This was a replacement to the same thing which I've had for 2 or 3 years, and I only had to replace it because I was negligent about replacing the filter.

Best Uses Comments about Katadyn Vario Microfilter: Took this on a 4 day trip to the BWCA. We had 6 people and two filters. The katadyn and my dads gravity filter. This thing worked great for about 5 minutes and became harder and harder to pump. Even after backflushing and cleaning the ceramic disc several times, it was extremely hard to pump. The resistance from the ceramic filter eventually became so great that the housing itself actually cracked, causing a leak and compromising the entire unit. good thing we brought the extrea filter.

Comments about Katadyn Vario Microfilter: I am a Scoutmaster for a Boy Scout troop and love this awesome filter. We get great tasting, clean water at volumes enough to tame the thirst of all our boys. Thanks!

Comments about Katadyn Vario Microfilter: Our Scout Troop of 4 adults and 8 scouts took two of these on a 10 day trek in Maine and did not carry the first drop of water other than what each person carried in their bottle. When you consider the weight and volume of the water we used versus the pumps it was no contest. if you throw it in the trash after 350 gallons it's like having all your water delivered directly to your camp for about a quarter a gallon. How can you beat that?! over the life of the unit it will cost much less than that

is there any type of indicATOR TO KNOW WHEN TO REPLACE THE CERAMIC ELEMENT AND CARTRIDGES1 answer
A:
The ceramic is cleaned through scrubbing. There is a spec for the thickness of the ceramic and you would measure this. For the activated charcoal element, it will darken and pumping will become hard.
PLEASE NOTE If you live in the state of Iowa, we are unable to sell you any water purification system due to Iowa Department of Public Health Restrictions. We apologize for any inconvenience.
