Just last week-end, a bear ran across the road just as I rounded the bend, so I would say they work!
Pros Cons Best Uses Comments about Coghlan's Bear Bell with Magnetic Silencer: These bells don't work. The Rangers at Yellowstone call these dinner bells for bears. Your best bet is to sing loudly when hiking to alert bears or to shout loudly every few seconds.

Comments about Coghlan's Bear Bell with Magnetic Silencer: The bear bells make noise; the silencer works. The kids love hiking with them. Do they really keep bears away? That is beyond the scope of this review:)

Comments about Coghlan's Bear Bell with Magnetic Silencer: We used this bear bell in many National Parks where Black Bear or Grizzly bears live. Although we love to see wildlife, we did not want to come up upon a bear, especially during high winds and hiking down wind. The bell kept a clear path for us. Be aware and courteous to other hikers though. We imply "silenced" the bells when we saw an approaching hiker or a hiker taking photos of birds, flowers, marmots, etc. And, we did see a few black and grizzly bears in Glacier National Park, from a distance, which is where we like to keep them. And sure, it may have been just luck that we did not come up on a bear. But, this bell gave me piece of mind and it is such a small item to take with you. Why not!

Comments about Coghlan's Bear Bell with Magnetic Silencer: I purchases the bear bells for myself and teen age kids, We live in the mountains of Colorado, they love them and keep them on their day packs, This is bear country. The bells are small and work well and can be easily silenced when required, easily removed and repositioned or relocated to another backpack or what ever your needs.
