Comments about Metal-Ware Open Country Backpacker Cookset:

This was purchased to replace a coated set that couldn't be used over an open fire. The set works great for two people better than I expected. With the two pots we put one over our pocket rocket stove and the other over a small four rock setup (one under the pot and three for windbreaks) over a hexamine tablet. Worked awesome! The hexamine left quite a bit of debris on the pan but we just took it to the river and used a cloth and some sand to clean the bottom. It came really clean. The cups are also measuring cups which worked out really great when measuring the water to boil for the Mountain Meals. The handle is a must for taking on and off the flame and really easy to use. For such a small set we were able to fit a lot into the set itself before putting into our backpacks, including our folding spork and knife set, packets of butter (oil) and the pocket rocket (not the fuel.) The pans also cools down much faster than I anticipated which is great when you want to pack up after cooking a lunch on the trail. We have friends that have much more expensive set-ups but for us I can't see spending any more money that is as this works really well. Still need to try over a campfire, but given the results so far I expect it will be just fine. The only caution I have is that if you are only used to cooking in non-stick pans you will need to ensure you trying cooking at home first to learn how to cook in regular pan, I cook in cast iron so it was familiar to me.

Comments about Metal-Ware Open Country Backpacker Cookset:

I have had an almost identical set for over thirty years and it works great and is still in great shape. Bought one for my son five years ago. I like it so much that I'm giving one to my daughter now. It just plain works for all situations and is actually thick enough to cook in. I pack a homemade alcohol stove inside of it and a utensil set as well. I call it my kitchen in a can. Perfect for one or two campers. The only down side is that the new ones don't have the riveted strap brackets on the outside that I use to attach a handle so that I can use the fry pan as a lid for the pot.

Good product - could use a bail on the pot to hang it from. I will just improvise one.

Comments about Metal-Ware Open Country Backpacker Cookset:

I thought this was a great deal for the money. I cooked two meals in the pot and used the skillet to hold water for washing. The cups were just the right size and we were happy with it being lightweight. I don't think I would try to use it for anything nonstick (pancakes, etc.), but if I wanted something of that quality to eat, I would probably spring for the more expensive sets. But, following the pre-cooking directions included, everything turned out really well and we were very happy with it!
