The Katadyn is a mechanical, ceramic micro filter and uses no chemicals (healthier). Filters down to 0.2 microns (will remove all giardia, fungi, parasites, etc.) Built in pump produces about a quart a minute. Zippered carrying pouch included.

Comments about Katadyn Pocket Water Filter: Using this on my SOBO thru-hike of the AT. Yes it's heavier that most water treatment options but it's a very solid piece of gear that I plan on using for many trips. Well designed pump allows for easy operation. Comes with everything you need to maintain it. This includes a separate ziplock bag to store the output hose to avoid cross-contamination, silicon to keep the o-rings and threads sealed, and also comes in a nice zippered nylon pouch. This is by far the best water filter I've ever used.

Comments about Katadyn Pocket Water Filter: Will be taking this one to Egypt with me, so I can relax knowing my water will be totaly safe and with good taste. Put a coffee filter over the pre filter screen, used the carbon filter on one of my nalgene's for the flavor and low and behold...I drank the water from my cousin's 10 gal. fish tank that held 2 turtle's...folk's ...it does not get any better than this....thirteen thousand gal's.? geeze. Some what a hefty price but look at it this way...you will only buy one water system and NEVER have to buy another. This system will be going with me on my second thru hike on the AT trail (first one=S-N, this time N-S, absolutely worth the extra weight and a very large worry off of my shoulder's.

The Katadyn Pocket filter will get the same pathogens out of the water as the Hiker. The difference is that the hiker has activated charcoal, which will help remove some chemical contamination. If you do not pump out of lakes or dirty water you will probably never need a new element. Unless you hike the PCT 20 times. I now use a sponge with a rough side to clean the ceramic element.
