Comments about Silva Explorer Type 3 Compass: While on a SAR mission I noted my compass had an air bubble in it. The band securing the needle had broken allowing air in. I've used SILVAs in all temperatures and altitudes and never had one break before. I hope the replacement holds up. The moral of this story is always back up crucial gear.

Comments about Silva Explorer Type 3 Compass: I bought 2; one for my son who in Boy Scouts and one for my personall outdoor use. [...] We were going through the process of demonstrating how to orient a map with a compass and it just didnt match the landscape. the map was opposite. It appears that the polarity of one of the compass' magnetic needle had been reversed [...]. A few seconds of us all looking a two new compass' with their north needels pointing in oposite directins was cause for a good laugh, but a word to the wise. Make sure to check ALL your gear before you head out and really need to use it.
