Comments about MSR Whisperlite Shaker Stove:

Simple design & easy to disassemble & easy to clean. Unfortunately the stove gets covered in soot from the pilot lighting. Plan on dirty hands and a rag to wipe off. Also, the stove does NOT burn the fuel left in the hose from the tank after closing the valve. You will spill 3-4 tablespoons of fuel on the ground every time! Wish I bought a canister stove...

Comments about MSR Whisperlite Shaker Stove:

I mostly use this stove in the winter months, but it has been pressed into service in summer too. It has never let me down and I consider it one of my most loyal travel companions.

I like the simple design and how easy it is to make repairs in the field. After being let down by some other stoves that require a full toolbox to fix I decided to switch.

Comments about MSR Whisperlite Shaker Stove:

I have been using MSR stoves for 30 years or more and the only trouble I've had with them resulted from trying to burn the wrong fuel. Some fuels appear to burn OK at first, but are quick to carbon up the inner workings of the stove. Priming with alcohol makes for a cleaner operation. Later models are 2 oz heavier than the old Whisperlites. Developments over the years actually result in a better product rather than merely cutting production costs. Simmering is not something I do on a regular basis.

Comments about MSR Whisperlite Shaker Stove:

I use this stove both for car camping and for multiple overnight backpacking trips. It's very easy to set up quickly and lights even when the weather is very cold. On a winter camping expedition with 8 other people, my stove was one of the few that would light at ten below zero! Water boils quickly so meals can be prepared in record time. Stove cools off pretty quickly too. I've used it at multiple altitudes (2,000-11,000 feet) and it worked like a charm. Worth every penny!

Comments about MSR Whisperlite Shaker Stove:

I have backpacked with a whisperlite for more than 20 years on the same stove. My international version has been used to burn petrol, diesel, white gas, dry cleaning fluid, and kerosene. White gas and dry cleaning fluid are the cleanest, but all work well. The stove is powerful and simple to maintain if you can read directions. A small bottle of fuel will last 3 days for two people. Add fuel allowance if you are at altitude. I have used this stove successfully in temperatures down to -10F and at altitudes up to 18000 feet without difficulty. Nothing cooks as well at altitude on any stove, but this stove puts out the energy just fine. Works great in high wind conditions as well. For an avid backpacker who does not want to break the bank, and hopes to get years of use, this is highly recommended.

Comments about MSR Whisperlite Shaker Stove:

So from my understanding this is a classic model and I can understand why it has been around for so many years. It's compact, lightweight, powerful (relatively), stable and very very durable. People have these stoves for years and years without problems. The only downside is that it has no method of controlling the temperature. The stove is either on or off no in-between unlike other MSR stoves that are larger and more expensive but have temperature control. Another downside, I feel, is the priming stage of lighting. Other MSR stoves (ones that use iso fuel) can be lit on demand and start cooking right away while this stove (and other white gas stoves) has a 30 second priming stage or warming stage in which there can be no cooking.

I bought one of these a few months ago thinking it was an international whisperlight. I burned regular gasoline in it and it worked fine. But I see it lists in specs to burn white gas. I need to buy another one since I left the last one in New Zealand. Can I use regular gasoline?

Whisperlite's run on white gas. The older international Whisperlite runs in white gas and kerosene. There is also a MSR Whisperlite Universal Stove will burn unleaded fuel and have the option of isobutane.

what is the life of each bottle?
Asked on 2/9/2013 by amy from Republic WA

            1 answer

            • Staff Reviewer

              A:

              - The 10 oz. bottle will burn for 68 minutes on high.
              - The 20 oz. bottle will burn for 136 minutes on high.
              - The 30 oz. bottle will burn for 204 minutes on high.

The bottle will last as long as you use a petroleum type fuel. If the o-rings on the bottle are cracked then it will need to be replaced.
