Light My Fire Swedish FireSteel 2.0 Scout

Item #: 80013

Our Price: $12.99

Originally developed for the Swedish Department of Defense, the legendary Light My Fire Swedish FireSteel® is the original fire starter. Being the best, however, means always having to push the envelope. The result is the next generation, with an improved striker that makes it even easier to build a fire in any weather, at any altitude. The second generation Swedish FireSteel 2.0® is redesigned, with a color-matched lanyard, and a built-in emergency whistle. The Swedish FireSteel's dependability and intense, close to 3,000%C (5400%F) sparks, have long made it a favorite of survival experts, hunters, fishermen, and campers. It has also found its way into cabins and backyards as a foolproof way to light stoves and gas barbecues.
  • Durable - lasts approximately 3,000 strikes.
  • Improved stainless steel striker.
  • Ergonomic handles.
  • Built-in emergency whistle.
  • Produces a 3,000%C (5,400%F) spark.
  • Works when wet.
  • Compact and lightweight.
  • Lights campfires, stoves, gas-barbecues.
  • Bright spark - can be used as emergency signal.
  • Compatible with Leave No Trace ethics.
  • Weight: 0.9 oz., 26g

Instructions:
  • 1. Take a small quantity of cotton balls, TinderDust™, dryer lint, or any other flammable material. Build them up into a pile.
  • 2.
    • a) Grip the FireSteel with one hand.
    • b) Take hold of the striker with the other hand.
    • c) Position the striker against the FireSteel rod.
  • 3. Force the striker 'slowly down' with the thumb of hand holding the FireSteel.

Comments about Light My Fire Swedish FireSteel 2.0 Scout:

A sweeping motion to create a spark worked better than pushing straight down on the steel. Easily lit dryer lint and vaseline coated cotton ball. Also lit my backpacking stove. Great to have as a backup in case you run out of matches or your lighter fails.

Comments about Light My Fire Swedish FireSteel 2.0 Scout:

Granted I used a vasiline infused cotton ball, but I got a fire on my first try. I've practiced since and let's just say this is a great tool. Sure matches or a lighter are easier, (maybe), but if they get wet you're screwed. Even if you don't plan on a fire, you shouldn't be caught in the back country without one of these. Glad I got one.

Comments about Light My Fire Swedish FireSteel 2.0 Scout:

I have tried to use this type of Firesteel on several occasions and with different types of tinder:

                    - dry paper
                    - birch bark
                    - dry grass

I did manage to get huge sparks. But apart from a headache that I got once from watching those sparks for more than 20 minutes, nothing happened and I could never actually start a fire.

Indeed, although all those sparks went straight into the tinder, the Firesteel that I acquired has never worked. Not even once. I insist upon the fact that at least one millimetre of the ferrocerium stick has been scraped off in the process.

Perhaps you should consider adding a warning for people who wish to buy this product.

Indeed, for a reason unknown to me, it seems that those Firesteel sticks are often considered as an elementary survival tool. However, I wonder how someone would react in a survival situation if he had to rely on that product. Take for example someone that has just fallen into icy water and needs to build a fire within five minutes. I have tried to light a fire for more than twenty minutes using such a Firesteel stick, with no result whatsoever (apart from a slight headache).

Of course, I realise that I might not have acquired the necessary skills in order to use that Firesteel. But I did follow all the instructions. All the same, I find it hard to believe that someone would need to go through a special training program before he could really master the use of that Firesteel.

My advice: don't forget to take a box of matches or a simple lighter in your backpack. Cheaper and safer.

These things are fantastic. I've tried a couple, and they really do light a fire quite well. Combined with a good waterproof tinder such as cotton balls rubbed in petroleum jelly, you've got a reliable fire kit. I keep one in my survival pack I carry while adventuring and I bought this for a nephew who is into scouting.
