Comments about Ruffwear Bark 'N Boots Polar Trex - 2011:

I had at first thought these boots were the right thing for my sheepdogs, Mopsey and Rufus, to protect them from the salt used in NYC.
Rufus's paw measures 3.75" across, but the Ruffwear does not take the conformation of the front feet into consideration when they designed these boots. Rufus's front digits are way too long for the design of this boot, and his front "knees" do not accommodate the design. In short, the boots could only be kept on his front feet by making the straps way too tight for his comfort. Furthermore, the drawstring at the top of the boot is a cheap way out. This boot needs serious re-design and it needs at least two more strap closures and the design must also consider the difference in conformation between the front legs and the back. Their hocks (on hind legs) having less of an angle to the foot than the front legs allowed the boots to stay on better. These boots might work fine for small dogs, but they are a waste of money on my dogs, who weigh 127 and 87 pounds each.
The materials used (exception being the closure system) are very fine, the design is unacceptable.

Comments about Ruffwear Bark 'N Boots Polar Trex - 2011:

In order to keep these on the feet of my two Old English Sheepdogs (Rufus and Mopsey) I had to make the straps tight to the point that it caused Rufus to get a sore on a front foot. These are very well made with excellent materials, but they appear to have been designed by people who do not know dogs.
There is no attempt to match the conformation of the dogs foot in these things; no consideration that the front and hind legs have different conformation. No ability of the gaiter part of the boot to adapt to the shape of the front leg. The rears stay on better because the hocks do not have the right angle bend of the front legs. I would not only NOT recommend these to anyone, I would urge anybody who is considering these to avoid them.
For the amount of money they cost, you should really get something better, something that works. Perhaps it is the long hair on my Sheepies legs that makes these boots come off, but I rather think they should stay on long hair or short. I made a grave mistake buying these before I researched them more. I bought the low boots as well and they seem to stay on better, the Grip Tex, I believe. As for the winter boots, stay away from them. Rufus has a sore on his left front paw from the strap that is worse than what salt would do to his paw, and I feel awful having caused it with these boots. As for proper sizing, I measured their paws, and Rufus has 3.25" and Mopsey 3.0". The boots are just remarkably poorly designed.

Thought this would be a great thing for my dog, an active 5 yr old golden who I take out in all weather conditions including snow. Measured her paws as instructed and ordered the correct size. I placed them on her, and on of the elastic cords easily fell off one of the boots when I was cinching it down, an obvious defect, but I tied it off and thought I would simply exchange them for a new one. However, I ended up returning the boots for a full refund because the boots would not stay on. After 3 different attempts on 3 different occasions taking the dog out with the boots, they would come off within minutes. This was with normal walking activity. This is a great idea, but at least with my experience, they did not stay on at all.

The most important issue with these sturdy and well built dog boots is that they must fit properly. the first time I sized my dogs' paws I was one size off on each, which made a huge difference. Once I returned and replaced with a size smaller (each) they fit well and stayed on their paws. At first, just put them on for a short period of time (10-15 mins) and work up until the dog is used to them.

My wife and I tried repeatedly to use these boots on our dog. It was difficult to put them on, and once the boots were on, our dog would only take a few steps before off they came again.

The product itself was made well and definitely sturdy. Unfortunately, the boot didn't stay on our dog. We were really hoping it would, as he's got sensitive feet that get chewed up with the snow and ice.
