    Falling apart after a year

Comments about Terramar Thermawool Superfine Merino Wool Midweight Pants - Men's:

I wore these probably 50-80 times and washed them (carefully by hand) maybe 7 or 8 times. Backpacking, walking around town, relaxing, any time it was chilly.

They were super great (5 stars worthy) until the wool started to unravel in the crotch/butt area. Now they are falling apart.

Terramar only accepts returns via the retailer, and it's now past the year in which Campmor will accept a return, so I'm completely out of luck.

Looks like a good deal for merino, but you get what you pay for.

Comments about Terramar Thermawool Superfine Merino Wool Midweight Pants - Men's:

I purchased one of the more expensive brands recently and have used the Teremars on a couple extended canoe trips and camping. So here is my honest review based on some experience and brand camparison. Hope this helps for those trying to gear up the next trip because i always value a good review.
Purchase a pair of these for a Quetico canoe trip two years ago and have used since several times on other shorter canoeing and camping trips. It is merino wool and not itchy, but they are almost half the price of comparable merino products for a reason. It's 180Gr/m2 where most of the comparables are 230 or 250. So it's not as heavy of fabric and is somewhere between light and midweight. The fit was a bit off. I usually wear a large (5'10 - 165 lbs) and the pants were too long in the rise and length. A couple cycles throught the washer on hot and fit fine :-). Seriously. I recently purchase a set of Minus 33 merinos that were being discontinued at a great discount. They are of better overall build quality and sizing much more accurate. When purchasig the theramar's I did read several reviewers complaining of the waist elastic. The Minus 33 have much better quatlity there and i suspect the Smartwools and others probably have a better overall build quality as well. But, i'll be taking the Teremars as my second pair (i'd purchased a pair of heavy silk as my second pair for the Quitico trip..silk is no comparison to merino for outdoor use) on an extended Allagash May canoe trip. They work just fine as a pair of lighter midweights and they are merino so they don't stink after a couple days and aren't as bulky as polypro. 3 stars *** - they are less expensive for a reason but they are a decent pair of merino woolies for the price.

Comments about Terramar Thermawool Superfine Merino Wool Midweight Pants - Men's:

Product is okay. A bit cheaper fabrication than I was expecting. Definitely not top of the line. Thermals are a bit thin and not the softest as merino wool goes. If price is the goal these work. Otherwise, I would go with a higher end product. It is worth it in the long run.

This is a great alternative to SmartWool. At first, it kind of itched but after two washes, it became soft and the itch was gone. Item did not shrink in the wash and colors didn't run. It kept me warm with just jeans down to 30F degrees. Using it with a fleece mid-layer and shell pants kept me warm down to 0F. Controlled odors well - tested it for 3 days without washing. Awesome product.

Probably the durability is not too different between synthetic and wool. Laundering is what weakens fabrics. Launder cold line dry to preserve durability.

Not sure what size to get. I'm currently wearing size 38 waist in jeans which fit tight after a wash but then loosen up after a while. Guess I'm on the fence of either L or XL. I was told that looser is better then tighter in cold weather. Anyway, will these shrink after a wash? What size would be best?

If you are a size 38 waist, a size large should be fine for you.

How does the Geo Fleece compare with the Thermawool in terms of warmth, weight, "dryability" and warmth while wet?

                          A:

The geofleece is a thicker long under wear and would dry quicker due to the 100 % synthetic fiber content. As for durability both the thermawool and the geofleece are very durable. Wool will reatin warmth when wet as well as a synthetic fiber.

I'm a size 34 waist and usually a size 34/34 in pants fit great. Not sure if 34 is my actual inseam or not. What size would you recommend? Can I expect them to shrink at bit?

A 34" waist is the top end of the M range. The inseam for a M is 30".
