This is the second one I ordered. The first one I ordered 14 years ago and it's still as good as the first time I used it.I put it in my pack with things that I need to keep dry and unbroken.

I have some radio gear I take kayaking and although weight isn't as worrysome as hiking, it is still a factor - as is cost. Also, I am not concerned that this will be submerged - just splashes or a short dunk. Finally, the "bird" case alternative usually has less interior space for a given outside diameter. So I will be looking at GSI choices first from now on.

This box was to allow a Pulmonary Hypertension Patient to swim again. Some P H Patients have a pump to pump life saving medication into their hearts continously 24/7/365 days a year. The pump to send this life saving medication (Flolan or Veletri) is not waterproof or even close and is very expensive thus preventing going into the water. I used this box to allow my wife to go back into the water. I had to drill a hole in the top so that line from the pump can be threaded into the box and connected to the line to the heart. The box floats behind her as she swims.

I use this to protect electronic devices. Using several pieces/layers of custom fitted foam, I layer the devices one on top of another. By arranging things this way, you can fit a surprising amount of gear. The box is already waterproof, and the foam improves shock absorbtion so you end up with a sturdy, reliable box at a pretty good price.

I think it gives you more usable room (both inside the box, and when carried with other items inside a pack) than a Pelican-type box (or equivalent) because the difference between the inside and outside dimensions is less. OTOH, this box isn't going to take as severe a beating as a Pelican-type would.

By biggest nit is the latches. They close and hold firmly, but require more pressure than you might think. Translation - there will be times when you try to work the latches when hands are cold or wet, and your fingers are going to slip off the latch and jam into the case, at which point you'll utter a few choice words. Compare the operation if these latches to a Pelican-type, and you'll notice the difference. I think Pelican-type latches incorporate a little bit of cam-action, whereas these are direct-pressure latches.

Ultimately, I chose this particular product because I had some very specific size requirements, and nothing else fit the bill for the quality and price. In that context, I'm happy with the purchase.

I mainly use it for traveling, to protect my binoculars, cameras, headlamps, gps, fishing reels. I have three of those boxes. I use my Pelican cases when weight is not an issue.
