Earl 'The Crazy One' is credited with the 1st recorded continuous thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail. Before Earl no one thought it even possible and the ATC refused to believe him at first. After WW II Earl was tormented by what he had experienced and decided to fulfill his promise to his buddy, who did not make it back, to hike the trail. The trail is difficult today but back in 1948 Earl faced many obstacles such as incomplete blazing, lack of maps and shelters and the mere fact that he was doing what had not been done before. Written in a spare style, Earl has an eye for detail and the natural things on the trail. A classic. This was the first of his 3 thru-hikes, his last was in 1998 as he approached his 80th bithday. This is where a trail legend was born.
