It was broken from the beginning. I guess I received a defective one but after reading other comments I am not the only one.

Comments about SteriPen Journey Safe Water Purifier System Pack: This is a simple to use product that will ensure the water you drink is free of harmful bacteria. You may still need to strain the water of any large debris but this device kills 99.9% of all bacteria in the water making it safe for human and pet consumption. This is a MUST HAVE for anyone who travels abroad or where they are not sure if safe potable drinking water is available. This does not have the solar charger feature for the battery but I have used mine numerous times in a 4 month period and the batteries are still strong. I just pack extra batteries for it just incase.

This takes special batteries and could be a real problem on the trail. However, I am going to try to use it on my 2 week Appalachian Trail hike this year. Will know more then. Bought 2 new batteries and the product worked as advertised.

Comments about SteriPen Journey Safe Water Purifier System Pack: May need to add a VERY small amount of salt to rainwater to activate the water sensor. A wiring problem was quickly fixed by the factory. Uses lithium batteries, which are not as easy to find as AA or AAA, and cost more. Rechargeables are available. The best part: great water in 90 seconds. No pumping. Attaches to many water bottles.

Loaned to a friend who traveled to India for 3 weeks and she too was impressed with its ease of use and lightweight bulk. If you don't dry it off after use, can tend to not be readily available at next use. Think that it pays for itself just in knowing that your drinking water/clear liquids are safe!
