Comments about Hydro-Photon SteriPEN Ultraviolet Water Purifier: We got this for a trip to Costa Rica and ended up using the filter almost exclusively. I have taken it backpacking and for the weight and the short battery life creating the need to carry extras, i suggest a filter.

Comments about Hydro-Photon SteriPEN Ultraviolet Water Purifier: I bought this model because it was less expensive than the Journey and used AA batteries which I have standardized for devices in my pack (GPS & Lantern).

Comments about Hydro-Photon SteriPEN Ultraviolet Water Purifier: Bought for lightweight backpacking, to replace standard pump filter. Tested it at home w/ recommended lithium batteries, but on first use on trail, it wouldn't turn on. Had to use alkaline batteries (all we had extras of), and it worked; the lithiums worked fine in other devices we had on trail. It's difficult to use with soft-plastic water bladders and large metal water bottles w/ smaller mouths. Not sure how UV affects use-life of water bladders either (UV wrecks your tent fabric and other plastics). It's supposed to be lightweight, but when packing the extra (take at least two full replacement sets) batteries (which cause considerable environmental damage to make), you're better off with the old reliable mechanical pump that doesn't go in the landfill when the lamp burns out. Nice idea, not worth the hassle or money.

Comments about Hydro-Photon SteriPEN Ultraviolet Water Purifier: I used the Steri-pen to sterilize lake water.. for some reason the unit would not work at times...no error message very frustrating luckily we had a couple of others to borrow or could have been a real issue

Comments about Hydro-Photon SteriPEN Ultraviolet Water Purifier: I took this on a three day trip through the NH wilderness area. It performed flawlessly and it allowed me to carry less water since I could purify water as I needed it (water is heavy). Great tool, light weight and with the adapter I purified the water right in the drinking containers.
