It's not your average duffel bag. Made from a durable laminate material, the Base Camp Duffel is a bomber of a bag. Amply resilient to be roughed around in-flight, or to be transported up a mountain via a yak, this is one burly duffel bag.
  • 1000D Phthalate-free TPE fabric laminate. 840D Jr. ballistic nylon.
  • D-zip with zipper flap for visibility of entire bag contents.
  • Twin haul handles on ends for towing and tying down when traveling.
  • Rugged construction with extra bartacks and double stitching for extra reinforcement and improved durability.
  • Alpine cut shoulder straps for comfortable, easy carrying as a backpack.
  • Four compression straps to secure contents and lash bag down when traveling.
  • Two internal side pockets.
  • ID pocket on top for permanent name tag storage.
  • Locking zippers for added security.

I have a smaller version of this Ive been using the past year and absolutely love which influenced the purchase of this model. The larger one is just as great as the smaller. I highly recommend this bag for travel, especially if you travel a lot.

Great bag to own. Very durable, practical, and useful. Water resistant so in the back of a truck, boat, or transfer on a plane, you don't have to worry about it. You can fit tons of stuff in them. I have the M, L, and XL. Great to buy as a gift

Comments about The North Face Large Base Camp Duffel:

I purchased this bag to use during our Mt. Kilimanjaro climb. The bag is durable, roomy and easy to carry thanks to all the straps. However, it rained every day of the climb, and water got inside my bag through the zipper seams. Fortunately I had everything separated into dry bags, so nothing got wet. True to the product description...it's only water resistant. So, if you need a waterproof bag this isn't it.

These bags are lifetime and superior to anything I have ever seen. I bought this one for my son as a Christmas - college gift. Now I get mine back!!! ****Highly recommended with years of expereince!!

This is a great product. Very durable, almost waterproof, spacious, and nice looking bag. I wish North Face still made these with the 2 internal side compartments instead of 1 big compartment on the top but I still love this duffel.

Comments about The North Face Large Base Camp Duffel:

If you are looking for the sturdiest duffel on the market, The Base Camp is an incredible buy. You can trust TNF to use the best materials to construct a relatively indestructible pack when comparing to the others.

I researched and compared pros and cons of almost all worthy competitors. For the most part, the Black Hole Duffel by Patagonia was a close runner up the entire way.

I was only considering duffels with backpack-style shoulder strap carrying systems.

Planning for a backpacking trip in South East Asia, I began looking into high capacity camping backpacks, but due to their higher price to volume ratio compared to duffels, which usually have much more volume for the price, I began looking into more economic, yet suitable options in duffels (with backpack straps of course).

While the Base Camp duffel uses a lighter massed nylon (840 and 1000) than the Black Hole (1040 or so), the weaving pattern allows for the "ballistic nylon" labeling, which BTW is the same material used in WWII bomber flak jackets (so I read). Upon receiving my duffel, I immediately was reassured of the claims to integrity. It looks and feels indestructible, and seems pretty water-proof. The high-quality zipping system also allows for the options of a little lock.

Two compression straps on each side of the bag allows for reducing empty space when the pack is less-than-fully packed, which I'm sure will help with by-passng carry-on rules and shoving the thing in the overhead compartment.

The only issues I foresee having are the lack of micro-organization options and the non-existant waist band. The only other compartment on this thing is a zip mesh pouch on the underside of the main flap for toiletries or documents. There are no pockets anywhere else, not even on the ends. Not having a waist band disallows the user to reduce stress on the back and shoulders while adding stability on the move. However, these things are not typical on duffel bags, and having the backpack strap option is already a major plus.

        Buy it.

The North Face Large Base Camp Duffel is made of water proof material, however the zipper is not water proof. The seams are not taped either so it would not be a good duffel for submersion. An example of a fully water proof duffel is the SealLine Widemouth Duffel 80 Liter

These bags are quite sturdy and should hold up through airport and travel stress. The large would be about as large as would be convenient to carry around. The xl is quite.

certainly able to be in a torrential downpour w/o contents getting wet, but seams are not sealed and i would not submerse the bag and expect no water inside. I regularly put bag on car rooftop driving in snow and rain w/o issue.
