It's not your average duffel bag. Made from a durable laminate material, the Base Camp Duffel is a bomber of a bag. Amply resilient to be roughed around in-flight, or to be transported up a mountain via a yak, this is one burly duffel bag. For trips lasting three to four days, grab the medium size for ample room for your gear.
  • 1000D Phthalate-free TPE fabric laminate. 840D Jr. ballistic nylon.
  • D-zip with zipper flap for visibility of entire bag contents.
  • Dual daisy chains along the sides to tie duffel to the car roof, boat, etc.
  • Twin haul handles on ends for towing and tying down when traveling.
  • Rugged construction with extra bartacks and double stitching for extra reinforcement and improved durability.
  • Alpine cut shoulder straps for comfortable, easy carrying as a backpack.
  • Four compression straps to secure contents and lash bag down when traveling.
  • Two internal side pockets.
  • ID pocket on top for permanent name tag storage.
  • Locking zippers for added security.

Comments about The North Face Medium Base Camp Duffel:

Several of my coworkers have used base camp duffels over the years and I've always thought the bags looked good but was afraid they didn't have the compartments I needed for organization. I solved that issue by purchasing several zippered pouches, then putting items in the pouches and have had no problems with organization.

The quality of this product is outstanding. Very durable and tough. The only real issue is the zippers are very stiff and tough to move. But as time passes it has become easier.

Would actually rate this 4.9 if I could. Very pleased

Comments about The North Face Medium Base Camp Duffel:

Nice and roomy! Great, solid material. It comes with both short handle-straps and backpack straps, the latter of which I suppose are the most practical if you're going to be schlepping it long distances. But for just carrying it from the car to the cabin, or baggage claim to car, who needs those? Where's the shoulder strap??

I did some research to find out the best all around bag. Hands down it was the North Face base camp duffel. It is tough, really well made, can take heavy use and is perfect for both travel and outdoor activities. I bought it for my boyfriend who travels extensively and also likes to boat and fish. It also looks much nicer than in the photographs. You won't go wrong!

Comments about The North Face Medium Base Camp Duffel:

The medium is a little larger than one would expect, but reading the reviews ahead of ordering, it was anticipated. Really like the look of the orange color. The material is a bit stiff but rugged and accompanied by heavy duty zippers. Not many individual pockets, but I like this aspect of the bag. The medium may be a little big (when full) for a carry-on. Overall exactly what I expected and wanted in a duffel. I particularly like the shoulder straps so that it can be carried backpack style. Really useful for freeing up your arms when carrying other things as well.

Comments about The North Face Medium Base Camp Duffel:

As part of my job, I spend half a year camping in remote tropical islands. Luggage selection is a major issue since it needs to be (1) sufficiently versatile to facilitate constant/efficient movement between vessels, RIBS, rocky shores and camping sites, and (2) rugged enough to withstand constant abuse, occasional water splashing and heavy loads. This legendary duffel performs nicely under such demands and collapses adequately for storage. Plus, if you need to transport lots of gear, the different colour options for multiple duffels make luggage organization very easy.

Though notably rugged, the surface is easily scratched by rocks and other rough surfaces. This damage is NOT structural, only aesthetical, so it hasn't been a problem for me, but could bother look-oriented buyers.

If you are struggling deciding between the Medium and the Large, fearing that the Large might be too big, my advice would be to go for the Medium, which is surprisingly roomier than one would expect.

I plan to use this bag in lieu of a suitcase on an upcoming trip to Europe. I will check the bag on airline flights but will have to carry it on and off trains and other ground transporation.

Does anyone have recommendations on the large versus the medium sizes?

Sometimes overhead storage in trains can be a problem. Weight is not too much of a consideration, but rather the bulk volume.

                  A:

Most train overhead storage is more liberal than the airplane overhead storage. As long as there is flexibility to the bag because the items in the bag are compressible, it should store well.

I am confused. The first question asks if there are shoulder straps to carry on your back, to which customer care said no. However, from the picture, the shoulder straps are quite obvious. Is this not the correct photo? Also, does it come with a separate single strap (attaching on the front and back) to carry it like a traditional duffle bag on one shoulder? Thanks!

The fabric is water resistant, not waterproof, water/rain would penetrate through the zippers and seams. No shoulder straps for carrying like a backpack.
