A:
The material is made of coated waterproof nylon. However the seams, zippers and the top are not sealed or able to be sealed for submersion. For rain it is a pretty water resistant pack, though to make sure items do not get wet in multi day raining hikes you may want to get a rain cover.

This is not the best pack for backpacking since it is a travel pack, it tends to be bulky. You probably would not want to exceed 50 Lb. If you will be backpacking but need to have a pack that will travel well, you may want to look into a traditional backpacking pack and use a back pack travel bag like the Osprey Airporter LZ Backpack Tote
