With an LED lamp, this incarnation of the UCO Lantern far outlasts my trusty UCO Candle Lantern, weighs less, and is impervious to weather conditions. Its parabolic flashlight reflector lifts away from the LED when the body is extended, creating an inverse parabolic reflector that directs most of the light onto the nicely frosted cylinder. No need to carry the fold-flat steel reflector required by the candle lantern.

While the candle lantern could actually (eventually) heat a cup of water for coffee, I used my candle lantern for this purpose only once in well over a decade of backpacking. It was nice to think of it as an emergency heat source, but I never really used it for that.

So, this LED latern wins hands down over the candle lantern. I'm not sure what additional features would suggest paying more for the fancier (heavier) version.

Love this little lantern. However, the way the reflector is positioned it causes quite a bit of glare when placed on a table or anywhere lower than eye level. I simply turned it upside down - works like a charm. The constant clicking to get to different brightness levels is a bit annoying - a dial switch would be so much more practical, but other than that it's a great gadget!
