  • Q:

would this be a good unit for for marking portage points or rough rapids and as far as being water proof will it withstand a 2 or three day kayaing trip

If you will be in deep narrow canyons you will have reduced reception due to a lowered sky horizon and access to satellites. If your rafting trip will be in more open canyons then you will have a better access to satellites and better accuracy. If you are able to determine the lat/lon coordinate for the portage point od put in or take out you can enter this into the Etrex and label it. The Etrex would then be able to display where you are from entered way points.

Using ExpertGPS, yes you could. I use this software all the time for tracking canoe trips and airplane flights. I think it's now about $75 for a lifetime subscription. Topos and aerial photos of hte CONUS.
