Comments about Jansport Scout External Frame Backpack:

Although marketed towards youth, this pack is excellent for an adult. I'm 6'2" and the torso length sits perfectly at its max setting. The external frame pack is hugely underrated; on an overnighter with some decent climbs, a buddy and myself, both packing in appx. 35-40 lbs each, his internal/technical pack ($350) left him with an aching back and shoulders. The external frame ($90) distributes the weight directly to your legs; my shoulders and back were left fresh and ready to split wood. Haven't had the chance to take it on any extremely technical trails yet, but thus far I haven't experienced any inconvenience of instability that is often attributed to exoframes, and off-trail hiking/ bushwhacking hasn't been any more difficult as a result of the frame. And you can't beat the modular system that the exposed frame offers. lash an axe, saw, sleeping bag, tarp to the frame, save internal litres and still have access to the pack thanks to Jansport's front-loading design. In no way is this just a youth pack, 63 L is more than enough for 3 days, or more if you pack minimally.
Only major complaint is the sparse attachment points on the pack itself. Would enjoy more options and flow-through side pockets, but these are not major detractors, they just require more creative paracord work.

Purchased for my son, a new Boy Scout. Only used once so far- but this thing holds a lot!!! Love the fact that it loads from the front, not the top- much easier for my little guy to manipulate on his own. He claims it is comfortable and the weight is evenly distributed.

Bought one for my son when he was 11. still using it at age 16.daughter has one too. each of these packs have been to philmont twice--regular trek as well as Rayado. combined these two packs have 600 miles of Philmont as well as another 200+ miles of Smokies Mountains. never had a problem. great access to gear. can lash stuff to outside. durable. small waistband for the females. just can't beat it for typical scouting style backpacking.probably not for the minimalist/extreme soloist but for group backpacking where you may need to lash on trash bags or bear bags or extra gear others can't carry you just can't beat it.

Comments about Jansport Scout External Frame Backpack:

I bought this for my Boy Scout who just bridged over. I started him with what I thought was a reasonable 65L internal frame. Our first camping trip his tent was the last one down and he was only able to get about half of his equipment back into his pack (I had helped initially pack it and it was pretty much maxed out. He had trouble getting the pack on and off and he said it felt weird because the pack was so high above his head. Well, Mom doesn't know yet, but I got him this pack. It is fantastic. He packed everything except his clothes and there was enough room left to pack clothing for a long winter weekend. He said it was much more comfortable than his old internal frame. The front opening pockets save time and stress and really let your scout fold and find items instead of balling them up and digging down to find things. The sleeping bag compartment is particularly roomy and doesn't impinge on the other main compartment space when loaded. Even though this bag is 2L smaller than his old bag; it packs much larger than an internal frame due to the ease of access and large rectangular space instead of the narrow/high circular space. This is even before you include the extra space created by the frame at the bottom and top of the bag. Since our troop doesn't really do any thick brush or narrow passage hiking/camping I truly expect to see some more of these bags show up after they see my scout's. Just wait till the dads see my Jansport D2 I just ordered!

Comments about Jansport Scout External Frame Backpack:

Thought I'd finally update from my 30+ year old Jansport. The new pack is lighter and more adjustable. Not as "deep" as my old one so it doesn't have quite the capacity but more than enough room for a two-three day trip. Being able to carry almost all the weight on the hike belt is a definite plus as is the ability to load it from the front. I will never buy a top loading pack as you have to tear through everything to reach the bottom Will be using it for my annual Grand Canyon hike for which it is the perfect size.

Comments about Jansport Scout External Frame Backpack:

I bought one of these Jansport Scout backpacks back in 2002/2003 for my son when he was 12 years old and just beginning backpacking. He used it for 3 or 4 years and then passed it on to his younger cousin when he bought another, larger pack because he had grown out of the Scout pack. The Jansport Scout worked well for him while it fit him. It is a great 1st pack for youth because it won't "break-the-bank" and it can be adjusted as the youth grows. Jansport also has a great warranty. If something on the pack fails or wears out they will replace or repair it at no charge. Now I have bought a 2nd Jansport Scout for my grandson who just crossed-over from Webelo's to Boy Scouts and is now on his way to discovering the hobby of backpacking which is so much loved by his uncle and grandfather. I highly recommend this pack for youth.

I bought this backpack about 15 years ago for myself. I am now 59 years old. This is the lightest aluminum frame backpack out there. I have a 22 inch torso. I moved the top shelf all the way up and drilled a new pair of holes about 3/4inches above the top ones. I also moved the lumbar strap down as far as it will go (1 strap below the cross beam). The pack fits me perfectly. I moved to a frameless lightweight pack for a while but came back to this 2 pound heavier pack for comfort reasons. It is bomb proof. The Garcia bear canister fits in the bottom panel perfectly.

How do you combine a Camelbak hydration system with this backpack? Do you put the Camelbak on your back, and then somehow put the backpack frame on top of the Cambelbak? I am at a loss trying to figure it out since both systems are supposed to be carried on the back.

                        A:

The Jansport Scout External Frame Backpack is not designed for a hydration system like a Camelbak. There are 2 side water bottle pockets making the scout a water bottle pack. For hydration reservoirs to carry efficiently you need to load the water close to the back. Most packs have a hydration sleeve that hangs down between the shoulders. The scout does not have this. the other way to carry water is at the hip. The scout has water bottle pockets at the hip.

The top of the pack has a bar that supports the bag away from the frame. This bar acts as a shelf to stack something like a tent on top of it and strap the item down to the shelf.
