Comments about Jansport Carson External Frame Backpack:

This was a gift for my 11 year old grandson; who is just starting Boys Scouts. We liked the fact that this pack could be adjusted to his current size; but, is large enough to serve him as he grows becomes more involved in scouting or person camping adventures.

Comments about Jansport Carson External Frame Backpack:

I have not had the opportunity to use the new backpack. However, I have purchased and used Jansport backpacks since 1986. External frame packs support a large load for extended hikes and the weight does not shift as I move and bend directions other than forward, like internal frame packs have done to me when I've used them.

Comments about Jansport Carson External Frame Backpack:

This is my 3rd Carson in 20 years. I abandon my expensive trendy packs and return to my sturdy Carson for longer trips because it is comfortable, easy to pack and access and very sturdy. It easily holds enough gear and supplies for my 7 - 10 day trips. The comfort and convenience of it's extra zippers and pockets cost a few ounces, but fully loaded my pack still weighs under twenty pounds and I'm much happier.

I bought this for my son when he became a Boy Scout. He's taken it on a few camping trips and loves all the pockets and compartments, which make it easy for him to locate his gear and clothing when he needs it. The two zippers on the front make it almost like a duffel bag, allowing easy access for packing and finding things, instead of having to dig for things from the top. It's very roomy and not too heavy, which means that everything fits in the pack, instead of having to carry items separately.

Comments about Jansport Carson External Frame Backpack:

Great, functional, lightweight, even pretty comfortable for an external frame, at a very good price. Plenty of capacity and places to strap stuff on. Includes a pocket for a water bladder which was a nice unexpected surprise. I do wish the hip belt extended further and included some pockets for quick access to stuff. Since it's an external frame, I'd recommend having a duffle bag along to stuff it into if you intend to check it in for air travel. I'd also recommend getting a 100 L Duck's Back rain cover to go with it.

Comments about Jansport Carson External Frame Backpack:

My regular backpack was getting old and I had a Philmont trip planned so I purchased this pack for that trip. I did two 25 mile weekend treks and a 90 mile Philmont trek with this pack. I carried about 45 pounds, including food and water. THe good news is that the pack has lots of room, plenty of pockets, and separate storage areas. The bad news... the padding on the straps and waist belt is minimal. The waist belt bads do not even come close to fitting where they should. I wear a size 34 pants, so it was not my siz that caused the problem, the pads are just too short. Tere is some adjustment for the straps, but it is really minimal. It is difficult to properly adjust the weight so that most of it is on the waist straps instead of the shoulder straps. That makes for very uncomfortable treks with 45 pounds. The strap that goes across the chest is way to high... I actually felt like it was choking me. I ended up not being able to use that strap which lowere the stability of the pack. It should be lower. Also, the quality of the pack was not good. The webbing that was used for one of the water bottle pockets came unsewed during the Philmont trek. Also, the waiste buckle broke during the trek. If you are maybe 14 to 17 years old and are going on weekend treks, this pack might fit your needs, but for any serious backpacking, it is better to upgrade to a pack that can be properly fitted and won't break on a 100 mile trek. I prefer external frame packs becuase you can easily attach gear to the outside, but this one was a waste. I will be selling it at my next yard sell for $10.

                  A:

To measure your torso length, you will need some assistance and a flexible measuring device like a tailor's tape. Have a friend measure along your spine from the seventh vertebra (the bump where your shoulder meets the neck) down to a point even with the iliac crest (the top of the hip-bones). The distance along your spine between those two points is your torso length.

The Jansport Carson External Frame Backpack would be a great choice for a Glacier trip. To determine if it has enough room for the food and gear you will need. Determine the volume of your current pack that you use on several day trips locally and then determine if the trip you will be taking in Glacier will be of longer duration, requiring additional space for food and clothing. Your current pack may be sufficient. A pack is a portable house, closet, kitchen, pantry and bed for the duration of your trip.

A 50deg backpacking bag fits great in the bottom compartment. This leaves room for a pad and tent strapped externally underneath.
