Comments about Brunton Classic 8040G Compass: I use this compass while hiking and flagging new trails to be built. I hang it around my neck with the strap provided when not in use so I can't lose it( like I did my last compass). Easy to use.
Pros Cons Best Uses Comments about Brunton Classic 8040G Compass: Compass was shipped by Campmor with another product which incorporated a magnet. Compass arrived and did not point to North!!!

Comments about Brunton Classic 8040G Compass: Warning, the direction of arrow on this compass is backwards, and will confuse you. I wrote to Brunton, and they agreed that it was confusing, gave me a few excuses why it was ok, and then said that they don't make this compass anymore, and that the new OSS mirror compasses have the direction of travel arrow in the other direction . This is rather critical for taking map bearings and following them, so be careful. Let me know if you want to see the email from them.I found that the markings on the compass are rather easy to remove (with just some scraping with a fingernail!), so I removed the arrow, and drew another one in the proper direction (the way you sight). So, perhaps the fact that the markings are easy to remove (which would normally be a bad thing) in this case is helpful.I will probably not use this compass, because even though it is probably built well, it does feel a bit like a toy. The thermometer is silly, and the fact that their declination adjustment is tool-less means that the vial must be turned to adjust it, and of course this is the reason that they do not have orienting lines in the vial, only on the bezel. Those lines are much more difficult to use on a map than lines inside the vial. Add to the fact that the degree markings are actually on a label, instead of engraved, and you end up with a [$] compass that I would not want to rely on.
