Comments about Katadyn Hiker MicroFilter: I used this filter over a 3day period while backpacking on the Sheltowee Trace Trail (Kentucky's Long Trail). Worked really well, sometimes the outlet hose was a little tough to connect to the top of the filter (but my hands were really cold). It does help to have a third hand to hold the outlet hose when filling water bottle...can sometimes make you feel like a monkey a football...

Comments about Katadyn Hiker MicroFilter: Used it for the first time and carbon chips came out. Tryed it when we got back home and a handfull of chips came out. Contacted Katadyn and they said it was "normal" for some carbon chips to come out and still safe to use because the chips are only for odor and taste. It may be safe as they said but my confidence in it is now somewhat compromised.

Comments about Katadyn Hiker MicroFilter: Bought for a bcackpacking trip, as had used this filter before. Design hasn't changed much in the 15 years or so since I first used one, but it doesn't need to, as is a great design, and works great. Am glad i finally purchased my own.

Comments about Katadyn Hiker MicroFilter: Purchased this filter for a Scout Troop Northern Tier trek to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in Minnesota. This filter was used daily with no problems and really made staying hydrated easier. Easy to use by all our Scouts and leaders. Will use this filter on other treks to Philmont and Northern Tier again. THANKS!

Comments about Katadyn Hiker MicroFilter: My husband & I had always made due with water purification tablets. We bought the filter for a five day kayaking trip to Isle Royale last year. It worked well in the crystal clear Lake Superior waters but the real test was when we took a three night trip down the silt and debris laden Delaware River. Once you get the hang of it it pumps quickly and so far we've had no maintenance issues. Written instructions could have been clearer but that's a minor issue. Pros

Comments about Katadyn Hiker MicroFilter: Ended up useing it on a backpacking trip and using it to filter a (collapsable)bucket full of creek water. -I didn't send the water in to a lab or anything but it seemed to be pristine once it was pumped out.(I also humped an extra mile or two through deer trails and creek bed to get the "best" water source I could find.(I.E. not stagnant) )-Very lightweight and compact. - -VERY- Easy to pump.Only qualms. -The water still had a "leafy" taste.(I mean that literally. Take a clean green oak leaf and chew on it and thats the taste.) Wasn't bad, [...] If it bothers you, bring a packet of koolaid or somethin.-Would have liked to have 3 tubes. One (the -in-)tube I keep the little "floater device", and the "pre"filter. Would have liked to try to have been able to put both tubes in my canteen and filter the water a couple times.(Maybe help with taste?) Doesn't really matter though.

Comments about Katadyn Hiker MicroFilter: Took this as my only water filter source on a 5 day trip on the AT in Tenn. Water tasted great, one water source looked more like a puddle, and it tasted great as well. Easy to pump. Weight and size wasnt and issue.

Merchant response: The instructions for setting up the filter is to pump clean water through the filter to dislodge extra carbon particles. Once these particles no longer show up in the filtered water the filter is ready to use.
