Comments about Therm-A-Rest Thermarest RidgeRest Solar Mattress Regular: This product should not be considered for backpacking as it is too bulky. Minimally comfortable due to thinness of pad. Good barrier between cold ground. I would not recommend this product.

Comments about Therm-A-Rest Thermarest RidgeRest Solar Mattress Regular: The most comfortable foam mattress available. It doesn't pack as small nor is it as comfortable as some self-inflating options, but it will never disappoint with the surprise of not inflating or holding air when you're in the middle of nowhere. It's surprisingly warm, allowing the use of a lighter sleeping bag than normal.

Comments about Therm-A-Rest Thermarest RidgeRest Solar Mattress Regular: As an average sized male, at 5'8" and 147 lbs, I felt as though I was sleeping on a postage stamp. After the first night, which in large part was spent trying to find the mat as I constantly slipped off, I resigned to putting it in my sleeping bag with a fleece over the top of it. While this served to reduce the slippage, and my battle to stay afloat, however, my back and sides paid the price from being pressed by the ridged construction. Oh by the way, perhaps the "solar" properties are recognized and enjoyed by those campers that bought into the placebo effect. Trust me, there is no solar benefit to speak of. Pros

Comments about Therm-A-Rest Thermarest RidgeRest Solar Mattress Regular: I know this will last forever. I slept on my last Ridgerest almost every night for years. Yes, it packs large, but I strap it to the outside of my pack. The foam pads are especially useful when sleeping in cactus country... no holes to patch.

Comments about Therm-A-Rest Thermarest RidgeRest Solar Mattress Regular: I've used a Ridgerest for about 20 years now. These pads are bulky but you don't have to worry about puncturing them. I drag mine on top of rocks and logs fold it over and make a chair out of it near a campfire. It takes all sorts of abuse and you never have to worry about it. Works great for reclining or as a place to sit and eat dinner. Easy to clean too.

Comments about Therm-A-Rest Thermarest RidgeRest Solar Mattress Regular: I bought this for my son. Mine is over 25 years old, and still working fine. We put them under the tent to work both as a ground cloth, and a pad. This helps keep the tent clean, dry, and unpunctured, and it keeps us warmer in the winter, while providing some padding. If I were camping at a hard campsite, and I didn't have to carry it, I would suggest something thicker or softer. Comments about Therm-A-Rest Thermarest RidgeRest Solar Mattress Regular: The pad is great for the wet areas with plenty of sharps that I encounter . I was afraid of an inflatable because of punctures. It is a bit bulky but I am a hunter and prospector and carry other bulky items anyway. This pad is robust, warm, and just fine for the rough use that I encounter. It is much softer that a blue pad. No sore shoulders, but I am up several times a night to stoke the fire. Comments about Therm-A-Rest Thermarest RidgeRest Solar Mattress Regular: Took it backpacking Displaying reviews 1-10 |

Q:
Does this pad roll up or accordion-fold?1 answer
A:
The RidgeRest sleeping pad rolls up, does not fold up accordion style.Q:
What does R value refer to and mean with regards to the sleeping mats?1 answer
A:
The R value means the same as it does in the building trades. The R-value is a measure of thermal resistance used in the building and construction industry. Under uniform conditions it is the ratio of the temperature difference across an insulator and the heat flux heat transfer per unit area. Put another way the higher the number the more heat is retained and not lost to the ground.
