MTI UnderDOG Dog PFD

Item #: 39299

Our Price: $50.00

Stone/Sunburnt Red Camo

A better way to float your best friend!
With 90% of the buoyancy in the water under the chest area, the new underDOG life jacket supports the natural swim angle position of a dog. The traditional cape style dog vest rides on top of the back, pulling the hind quarters up in a horizontal position in the water. Because of the way a dog is shaped, this means that the head rides close to the water line. By moving the flotation under the body, buoyancy is shifted to chest, allowing the hind quarters to sink in the water. The dog's instinctive swim motion is allowed to be more effective. And the neck is released to so that the head can ride higher above the water line in a more relaxed position. The underDOG features a split form body and durable Nylon and Cordura fabric. Generous reflective trim highlights the collar, full side and top of the vest - areas that are exposed in the water, and shows up against car headlights in the parking lot of the take out. The reinforced carry handles will support the full weight of a wet animal. The carry handle in the collar doubles as a leash attachment point. 4 adjustments points, and cool mesh ventilation across the back and adjustable mesh bridge between collar and body.
  • Chest flotation allows dog to swim at a more comfortable upright angle in the water
  • Constructed of durable nylon and Cordura fabric
  • Reflective trim throughout
  • Reinforced carry handle in the collar doubles as a leash attachment point

MTI Adventurewear UnderDog Canine Life Jacket (Sports)
We tried another type of canine flotation device, and our boy dog was too embarrassed and upset to stand up in it. He's a lab and a great swimmer but needs hydro-therapy for a leg injury. I was holding up his chest for support while he was swimming and thought that the perfect safety vest would do just what I was doing -- support only the chest area and the neck. I thought about creating such a jacket and then found it was already in production and listed in Campmor's online catalog. This jacket is exactly what I was looking for.

It only has padding where the dog needs it -- on the underside -- unlike others that encase the whole body. I slip the top one of the middle straps through the yellow neck loop before connecting it and have had no problem with the vest slipping down while the dog is swimming. These vests are great for boating dogs who don't swim or for swimming dogs who swim in cooler and deep waters. I bought one for each of my dogs who like to swim all year round. Their internal organs are kept warm by the padding, and I don't have to worry about their safety when they go out a bit farther than I'd like. Don't bother looking at the other vests, these rock.

Comments about MTI (marine tech) MTI UnderDOG Dog PFD:

I would recommend trying on a life jacket for dog before buying one. My dog is 45 lbs so I ordered the correct size and its very long. My dog is an Australian Shepard mix so his body time is fairly common. The vest is too long and when your tighten the belts is sits wrong around his midsection. I've tried a few things and nothing gets it around his ribcage where it's supposed to fit. It's constructed like its made for a Bassett hound body time. Short and long. This is one of the more pricey dog vest so go try it on at a store before purchasing.

      Great idea, terrible water performance

        Cons

        • Dog Slips Out Easily
        • Mesh Area Too Small

        Best Uses

Comments about MTI (marine tech) MTI UnderDOG Dog PFD:

This product is a great idea but it has several major design flaws. The mesh area is substantially smaller than the adjustment straps on the body meaning to get the Velcro to close you would have to compress your dogs ribs...not acceptable at all. The body area regardless of how tight you pull the adjustment tabs always slides down to the dogs hind quarters. The neck body connecting tab is almost nonfunctional. Pull it too tight and the dog can not raise it's head, too loose and the pets legs can become tangled in the chest harness. The recovery handle exacerbates the problems...the dog's head is always dunked and the body section will slide completely off leaving you struggling with a scared god with nothing but a noose around it's neck.

Comments about MTI (marine tech) MTI UnderDOG Dog PFD:

I tried three other life vests, and this one worked best for my two fifteen pound dogs. One is shorter and wider (Papillion) the other is tall and very skinny (think Italian greyhound) I did find it helpful to attach the leash loop to the body strap to keep it in place when running and jumping. big advantage over other vests? THEY KEEP THEM ON! Other vests covering their backs must have been uncomfortable or hot, because both dogs tried to rub or roll them off. Once I have underdog on them they hardly seem to notice they are wearing them. ** you do need to spend time properly fitting them

This product is on the whole very good. It seems pretty durable and the handle on the back makes it easy to pick him up out of the water. My dog is a border collie mixed with Jack Russell, so he's fairly small. He fits in this OK, but not great, it has a tendency to shift more toward his mid-section. But it makes me feel more at ease when he's in my kayak.

Leah seems to be very comfortable in her new life vest. The vest staps loosen after they get wet and will need to be re-tightened. And we have had a problem keeping the neck stap tight. But over all it is a nice vest.

Depends on the dog. Initially dogs are not too keen on things wrapped around there midsection. However if you go do something fun they associate the fun with the PFD and they get use to it.
