Tails would probably be best for deep, fluffy snow, but for day hiking on trails in the winter, these are perfect!

Comments about MSR Denali Classic Snowshoe:

These are great snowshoes for crunchy or packed snow, but which is still not dense enough to just use crampons. The short length makes them feasible on narrow trails where 30" snowshoes would not work. Also, the grip on these are MUCH better than on standard webbing-on-aluminum-frame style snowshoes which usually have aluminum spikes in the foot area only.

In powder, you have to use the tails (sold separately), and they're not very well balanced once you put an 8" tail on the back. There's too much length on the back and not enough on the front. It's better than nothing but it's clearly a compromise.

My recommendation is to get these if you think you will mostly be using them without the tails. If you expect you would mostly have the tails mounted, reconsider.

Mine are still in good shape but I've met people on the trail with the same model who say the straps go after a few years. However you can get new straps separately for not a lot.

Comments about MSR Denali Classic Snowshoe:

I was familiar with the versatility of these shoes, having borrowed a friend's pair in the past. It was time to get my own. They are solidly built, easy to get in and out of, and perform well in varying conditions and terrain. The stabilizer bars provide good grip on ice and they handled deep snow better than I thought they would. I have not purchased the tails yet. Very pleased with my purchase.

Comments about MSR Denali Classic Snowshoe:

Great snowshoe for the price. I am 215 pounds and need a smaller shoe for packed conditions and a larger shoe for new snow. This gives me some needed versitility with the attachable tails. Not great for very deep snow with a pack at my size, but I have other snowshoes for that. I like the traction and the solid binding attachment. Hard to beat for the price!

Comments about MSR Denali Classic Snowshoe:

The MSR Denali Classic Snowshoe was recommend to me by an experienced mountaineer. After looking at various brands and reading reviews I decided to get the Denali.
I used it today for the first time and they were well tested. A beautiful day temp. approx. -2° C (28°F) Depth of sow approx. 5 feet and variable conditions, windblown snow, hard packed, frozen granular in between trees and some clearings at an elevation of 700 to 1000 meters (2296 to 3280 feet). The area I hiked in (Eagle Ridge, above Buntzen Lake) has some very steep terrain. Did not slip once or felt unsafe. I'm about 70 kg (154 lbs) and carried a 12 kg (26.5 lbs) backpack. Had 8" tails with me but did not use them. The boots stayed in position nicely. Outstanding grip and traction. Overall it was a very pleasant experience.

It depends on the type of footwear being used with the snowshoes. Ideally, it is best to go to a shop and try these on with the shoes you will be wearing while snowshoeing.

Without tails you can use this up to 170 with gear. Once you are over 170 a 4" tail will be advised for non packed snow conditions.

I'm 200-220 pounds, depending on the gear I'm carrying. Do I need the tails to keep me afloat, or will the base model shoes handle it?

If you will be on packed trails this will probably work by itself. However if you will be in unpacked conditions then a tail would be advised
