Comments about Eureka! Mountain Pass 2XTE Tent:

I use the product in almost all seasons. It is very comfortable in cold conditions and in hot ones. Storage in vestibules is great. The new design does not allow you to close the roof vents, so in coldest weather needs to be modified (as I have) with flaps to limit the large roof vents. (This is my third Mountain Pass tent. Second was my favorite. This one comes in second.) New fly design is overengineered and bulky.

Comments about Eureka! Mountain Pass 2XTE Tent:

Tent was easy to set up. The only setup issue was with the top pole through the fly. You have to put that on before attaching the fly to the tent. Roomy for 2 people. High quality fly material. Morning dew dries fast in the sun. Repacks easily. A bit on the heavy side for backpacking. Easily stows in a sea kayak.

Comments about Eureka! Mountain Pass 2XTE Tent:

Setup was easy. I admit I set it up in the backyard first before packing into the Pharoah Wilderness Area in the Adirondacks. The fly looks complicated but the yellow patch on the fly mates with the yellow on the tent strap, so alignment is a snap even in the dark. The poles are simple to erect and there are ample stake loops to secure the tent and fly if the ground allows. If we encountered frozen or rocky ground rocks would have held all in place, although the fly is held fast to the 4 tent corners.

This is a roomy well-built 2-person tent and the 7lb weight is acceptable to be assured comfort for two adults plus plenty of room to keep gear out of the weather. The vestibules are nice but we didn't make use of that extra room for this 1st trip out. If I backpacked in alone I may have taken my one-man lighter tent.

Over night the wind blew a steady 30-40 mph off the pond shore that we camped along with higher gusts and spitting snow. My Mtn Pass 2XTE shook and rattled but withstood the onslaught while a friends tent was pushed flat a few times.

I look forward to using this tent for winter camping and feel it will be a great all-season backpacking and kayak camping tent for us. I'm pleased with this tent so far.

Comments about Eureka! Mountain Pass 2XTE Tent:

I bought this tent after borrowing a similar Eureka tent from a friend. I needed a tent that would not leak in rain and bought this because it has a full rain fly and aluminum poles. Just got back from 5 days of camping in moderately wet conditions and this tent worked well.

Easy to set up but would probably replace stakes in windy conditions as these are light weight. I find Eureka a good buy for a reasonable price.

Comments about Eureka! Mountain Pass 2XTE Tent:

This product appears well designed. I have only used it once so far on a four day trip but it stayed dry (it rained twice on the trip) and seemed very durable and weather resistant.

The only cons I have for this tent are that the tent stakes are the cheaply made ones(as I've noticed most tents have) and first time set-up was a bit more difficult than for the Eureka Timberline which I previously owned.

Although the true performance of a tent can't be made after only one trip, I would recommend this tent for most camping situations other than camping in winter or other extreme weather type conditions.

Comments about Eureka! Mountain Pass 2XTE Tent:

Would be nice if the fly extended to the ground over the legs, rather than dripped onto the bathtub floor. This one has a large open-mesh roof that cannot be closed either partially or completely as prior years' models allowed. The bathtub floor has a seam, which is curious - why could it not be manufactured in one piece? Admittedly, I did not have a problem even with my older model.

My son't boyscout troop has several of these tents for troop use. It's a good solid tent that can be used 3 seasons.

Comments about Eureka! Mountain Pass 2XTE Tent:

Nice tent, grommets for tent polls are aluminum and one bent and broke off first time i used it, so i duck taped around all of them and it worked fine on my 3 week trip. It's heavy and is very large for 2 ppl. We slept 3 in it a few nights and it wasn't too bad. It's a great tent for the price and is an awesome car camping tent but it's a bit large and heavy for long backpacking trips. Vestibules are large and great for putting your pack under. It withstood 50 mile per hour gusts but i wouldn't recommend consistent wind because the poles did slightly bend. The steaks are cheep but worked fine on hard surfaces. In wet or muddy conditions use better steaks or natural steaks using p-cord. If you have the money you might as well spend more money for a lighter tent but this tent works good enough for me.

It is very easy to set the mountain pass up. 2 Hoop poles that are shock corded criss crood over the top of the tent. Clip tent up to poles and throw the fly over the tent secure to the corners of the tent.

What is the difference between this tent and the Eureka Scenic Pass 2XT tent? This one is more expensive so I'm assuming it's nicer, but it only has a partial rainfly so I'm a little confused as to what is better about it for the higher price. Thanks!
              Asked on 7/19/2010 by Anonymous

              1 answer

              • CUSTOMER CARE

                A:

There are several differences between a Scenic Pass 2XT and the Mountain Pass 2XTE.
                1. The Scenic Pass has a partial fly with the fly scalloping up the side of the tent. The Mountain Pass has a full coverage fly with no scalloping.
                2. There is a side vent on the fly of the Mountain Pass and there is not vent on the Scenic Pass.
                3. The coating on the Scenic Pass are: Fly(1000 mm) Floor( 1000 mm). The Mountain Pass coatings are
Fly( 2000 mm) Floor( 5000 mm). The higher the coatings number the more waterproof it is. So the Mountain Pass is significantly more waterproof than the Scenic Pass.
