The Sundome 4 sleeps 4 happy campers and includes a large door for easy entry/exit with a hooded fly to provide ventilation even in rain. A large rear hooded window also provides airflow for cross ventilation. Mesh vents on the roof provide additional ventilation and the rugged 1000D polyethylene floor is a bathtub style (wraps up the sides) for extreme weather protection and has welded seams, even in the corners, to guard against a leaky floor. Comments about Coleman Sundome 4 9'x7' - 4 Person Tent:

Bought to replace a comparable model by the same brand. We had the old one for about 13 years and gave it away to a friend this summer still in working order (although the poles were starting to show their age, with a bit of splitting and dead elastic in the connecting cords).

We set this up in our yard to apply seam sealer (two coats, with overnight drying time), then took it on a two-night car-camping trip in a state park with modern facilities.

On the bright side, it kept us dry through significant rain the first night, and gave no sign of weakness through heavy winds the second night. The box indicates that it has a slit through which you can pass an extension cord, so you can charge electronic devices overnight inside your tent. This is a really cool idea, and one I never would have thought to want 13 years ago; however, I forgot to bring an extension cord so I didn't use this feature (or even bother looking for the slit to see if it was positioned effectively). The base is rectangular, which makes for easy placement of a ground sheet. Also, the design of the sleeves for the poles is improved, making it much easier to get them into place (solo or assisted) compared to our previous tent.

On the not so bright side, this tent feels like it's more cheaply made than its predecessor (which, again, I believe was a comparable model from 13 years ago). During the second time setting it up (that is, at the state park), one of he poles started to splinter a bit (we had not seen this kind of wear on our previous tent until it's 13th year). While the seams didn't leak, the amount of stress they appeared to be under when set up concerns me.

There seems to be less solid fabric and more mesh than the previous tent. Based on the wind we experienced, I don't think I'd be comfortable using this tent during cooler weather (we used our previous tent down to the low 40s Fahrenheit).

I don't care for the "bathtub floor" design: while it seems like it would keep water out even with a river running underneath your tent (a benefit when needed), the large "lip" under the door makes it harder to get in and out of (a constant annoyance). Another flaw in the door design: unlike our previous tent, the door of this one falls into the tent when opened, in such a way that if the door is wet from rain, water falls into the tent. Both of these may be related to the lack of a mid-door tent stake (which was present in the old tent).

I mentioned the rectangular floor as a change from our previous model (which I'd describe as "rectangular with clipped-off corners"--resulting in an octagon with four very short sides). Compared to the old tent of the same size (four-person, or large enough for a queen-size inflatable mattress), this had a similar ceiling height in the middle, but the ceiling near the walls feels lower (don't have the old one to compare directly, so I can't verify this for certain).

The package describes this tent as good (in Spanish, "ideal") for backpacking, and I disagree. It is neither light enough nor does it pack small enough for that use.

Overall, I paid for a basic tent, and I got a basic tent. It seems to me it's not as good as the basic tent of comparable model from the same maker 13 years ago, which is disappointing. I highly doubt I'll be able to use this tent 13 years from now. I doubt even more that I'll ever buy another tent in this price range from this maker again. I trusted their reputation based on my previous purchase, and I don't believe they lived up to it.

Comments about Coleman Sundome 4 9'x7' - 4 Person Tent:

We ordered this as our first "real" tent for car camping and were very pleased with the construction, ease of set up, and overall quality. Zippers seem sturdy enough to stand up to our kids, and the fly installation was reasonably easy to figure out. Maybe not hearty enough for pros, but it worked really well for us.

Rated for four, better for one or two with cots. I could almost stand straight up in it, and it's structure was strong enough to hang a battery lantern from the center. It was perfect for what I purchased it for.

I used this for occasional recreational camping. Camped last weekend in the sun and rain and held up great. Only complaint is that it is rated for 4 people. Well, you going to have to be packed in like sardines to fit.

The Coleman Sundome 4 9'x7' - 4 Person Tent is a self supported tent. It will stand without staking. However it is advised to stale the tent out so a wind will not blow it away. The tent comes with skewer stakes. If you want to upgrade your stakes you could look at these stakes:

Dear Vicki, This tent does NOT requires staking. It is a free standing tent. That means all you gotta do is to put the ends of poles into designated o-rings at the corners of a dome, and that's it.It will stand up. In my opinion based on similar experience, it's kind of big for indoor. Perhaps a 7x7 tent of the same series (coleman sundome) will save a good 14 square inches of floor area, and 20 bucks cheaper...
