Big Agnes Flying Diamond 4 - 4 Person Tent

Item #: 28442

Our Price: $449.95

The Big Agnes Flying Diamond 4 is a 4 person tent that can either be a small family dome or a spacious backpacking tent. It is an all season tent, being capable of taking a snow load as easily as it is able to be used and well ventilated in the summer. It has 2 doors and 2 attached storage vestibules so you don't have to clutter the tent with extra stuff. The shockcorded hubbed DAC Reverse Combi aluminum frame is light, strong, durable and easy to assemble. The frame utilizes poles of varying diameters to save weight and improve usable space in the tent. The full coverage polyester ripstop fly protects the tent from harsh wind, rain or snow and will give you years of service. The mesh roof will keep air moving and let you stargaze should the weather cooperate. And as a bonus either the front or rear vestibules (or both) can be set up as an awning with your trekking poles.

Comments about Big Agnes Flying Diamond 4 - 4 Person Tent:

This tent is totally bomber in the high country. I spent a week with it at 12,000 feet in California's White Mountains, and endured high winds (40mph+), savage sun (not much shade in the Whites!) and several torrential thunderstorms (2+ hours with massive volume of big fat drops). It's relatively low profile for a 4P tent coupled with its B2 stealth faceted wedge shape shrugged of wind and weather that would have sent a Nancy-boy higher profile dome scurrying for the lowlands.

Comments about Big Agnes Flying Diamond 4 - 4 Person Tent:

I had high hopes for the Flying Diamond 4 tent. I have been so well served by the Flying Diamond 6 that I was so excited to see Big Agnes offer the Flying Diamond 4 tent. I could not have been more disappointed. The design is completely different than the Flying Diamond 6 and 8. They have incorporated a "Y" configuration rather than sticking with a dome style. The hub where the poles meet at the "Y" has a very sharp edge to it which is a pressure point on the fly. As strong as the fly material may be, it just seems it would fail at some point long term. If I were to keep the tent, I would have rounded over this part and it wouldn't have been an issue. The second thing that concerned me is that the Y configuration angles into the tent in such a way that the corner poles form a very acute angle with the guy lines. Because of this, there is virtually no support provided buy the guy lines. All four corners can be easily collapsed inward with light finger pressure. The "waist" pole is actually secure and when wind hits the tent, the corners will give and the very prominent waist pole will be the mast to this "sail" of a tent. I would not trust this tent in windy conditions. The third thing about this tent which was a deal breaker for me was the lack of ventilation. There are two vents in the fly at the front of the tent. That is all. None of the pictures of this tent provided by Big Agnes show the rear of the tent. There are no vents there. The fly has very little room above the tent body. The fly also nearly or actually touches the tent body along the sides of this tent. Because of this, condensation and comfort were a problem for me.
This tent has none of the fine qualities of the Flying Diamond 6 and 8 tents and should not be in the series. I believe a design closer to the Big Agnes Royal Flush would have been much more appropriate.
