Comments about Kelty Parthenon 8 2 Room Tent:

Update: Just took this tent out for the second time. Went to Cape Disappointment where the Pacific Ocean meets the Columbia River. Talk about windy! The tent did fantastic. We stayed dry through the down pores and wind storm. Only wish is that we could take 2 feet from the long side of the tent and add it to the vestibule. The vestibule keeps our shoes dry, tent clean and provides a place to shake off the rain but that is about it.

Comments about Kelty Parthenon 8 2 Room Tent:

We bought this tent as a replacement from a 20 year old tent we've been using over the last few years. My family has grown, and so we needed a bigger tent (there's 5 of us now, and wanted a bit more room).

I've had a Kelty sleeping bag for years, so I went with them, knowing they make great products.

After the first setup (in the backyard, of course), it was a breeze to setup with at least two people (would be difficult by yourself) in just a few minutes. You do have to apply a bit of pressure to get the poles into the right holes, and therefore need a bit of grip strength to make it work.

We didn't have any rain during our week long trek to Maine (amazingly enough!) so I can't attest to its waterproofing. I like how the fly comes down to the ground on the front and back, but it doesn't on the sides. The sides DO have a cover over the windows though.

One thing I would have liked to see - was a cover for the front mesh panel. If you don't put the fly on, then there is no cover for the front door (its only mesh). The entire roof is mesh, so if you had no fly, you'd be staring at the stars all night long (which isn't a bad thing).

I bought a 12x16 ground tarp, and wish I had gotten a bigger one. (the 12 foot side was a bit too short for the tent).

Of course, the tent stakes it came with were easily bent, and I bent them on the first time we set it up, so I'd recommend something more durable.

The duffle style carry bag - while I thought was great at first, got challenging to fir the tent into after a few nights of in/out.

Also, I removed the inside "partition," as we didn't need it, which was a nice feature that you can remove it entirely.

Comments about Kelty Parthenon 8 2 Room Tent:

Just finished camping in this tent for 30 days. We had two children and two adults. This thing is huge. I could stand up everywhere. We had two full size mattresses in it and still had tons of storage space. We were in Oklahoma in July. We had three huge thunderstorms and never got a drop inside. My only complaint is with the rain cover on the entryway is tiny, not much space to maneuver. I highly recommend this tent!!!

Comments about Kelty Parthenon 8 2 Room Tent:

This is a nice, good-sized tent. We also bought the footprint - some rain got between the footprint and the bottom of the tent making for a damp bottom. Glad we had a cot for our (inflatable) mattress or we wouldn't have been quite as comfortable. There are just two of us - we wanted room for our queen-sized mattress and supplies and this fit the bill. Went through a windy thunderstorm and everything stayed put and dry. The only thing I would change is the front entry of the fly when it is attached - it is somewhat awkward... it would be nice if the front of the fly came with poles to prop it up. Overall, quite happy.

Just used our new tent. Easy to put up even at 10 pm in the dark out of the box. Really roomy. My 6'2" husband can stand up straight anywhere in the tent. It might be a little big for those tiny campsites. Could have used a window in the back end for more ventilation for that afternoon nap. Rolled the fly back a bit; that gave enough breeze. Having the vestibule for shoes and the loops in the ceiling for hanging a light are a bonus.

Overall a great family tent. Very large and very sturdy. Kept us dry even in very heavy downpours we had the first time we used it. Plenty of space for a family of four to six with room for gear. Setup instructions could be better, though once you setup, it is pretty easy. Also I was surprised that the bottom was the same fabric as the rest of the tent. Be sure to put something underneath to protect against rocks. This is why I can't give 5 Stars.

Bought this for the family. It was easy to set up. I could do it by myself without too much struggle. The tent is well constructed. It has ample room. I have not had it in the rain yet so cannot comment on if it is waterproof but I don't think it will be a problem. I would buy this tent again.

Comments about Kelty Parthenon 8 2 Room Tent:

We used this tent for the 1st time at a local campground. It was our family's 1st camping trip together. Between my wife, 3 kids (8,6, and 4) and myself, we fit perfectly. We used 2 queen sized air mattresses, and still had nearly half the tent to put up a small table, with a pc monitor and PS3 so we could watch movies at night. Of course, as goes my luck, we had a pretty major thunder storm the 1st night. It poured on us all night, and the lightning show was pretty frightening. We were tucked into the woods fairly well, so even though we could hear the effects of the wind, we didn't really experience it down at tent level. Thankfully, the Parthenon held up to the rain remarkably well. I kept checking all the seams and around the side windows, and never saw any traces of water. The next morning my wife did discover 6 drops of water near one of the air mattresses, but we really don't know for sure if it was from the rain. We are just assuming it was. Considering I didn't have a chance to use any kind of water sealing spray, I think this was remarkable. Makes me feel good about our purchase.

Comments about Kelty Parthenon 8 2 Room Tent:

We used the Parthenon 8 on a six day trip in three different parks. Setup is easy for two and can be done by one without much difficulty. It's very roomy and we enjoyed standing up comfortably - a pleasant change from our backpacking habits. We had three days of medium to heavy rain showers, though little wind. The fly worked well and the vestibule was useful for access without bringing in wet shoes or parkas. The only water problem was on the floor. We have the matching 'footprint'. In one corner water found its way between the footprint and the tent floor, and after a day some dampness seeped through the tent floor fabric in a couple of places. Other than that the whole setup was water tight as long as the vestibule was kept fairly closed (see comment below).

Ventilation is fairly good though it could be a bit better. The side windows work as they should and the fly does allow them to be open in the rain. The screen top under the fly allows further ventilation. There is a back window in the tent, covered by the fly, and a very small covered window in the fly above that back window which is supposed to help ventilation. But that window in the fly can't actually be held open because the fabric across it has no slack - Kelty should be embarrassed about this aspect of the design. The vestibule can be staked and tied to be somewhat open in rain. Unfortunately it mustn't be left open enough for rain to get to the tent door. Although the door is waterproof, there is no flap over the zipper at the bottom so water slides down the door and then through the zipper into the tent. A flap over the zipper would have been a big improvement. But overall we were reasonably pleased with the tent's performance in the rain.

We bought this for comfortable car camping for two. With a full size air mattress, various packs and boxes of clothes and gear, and two chairs, there's still plenty of room to walk around standing up. If anything it's actually somewhat larger than we need, but that's not a complaint! It's larger than a big tent we used years ago, comfortably, for camping with our two children, so I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this for family camping.

The Kelty Parthenon 8 does not have a wind rating for this tent according to its manufacturer. They recommend tying all guy lines and having the tent staked out at all points to keep it secure.

All the floor and fly seams are taped. There could be a small number of corner and wall seams that would need sealing. It would be wise to get 1 bottle of seamsure

The Kelty Parthenon 8, 2 room tent probably has the "no snow" advisory due to the large relatively flat roof area.

                      A:

The windows on the Parthenon 8 do not zip close. The fly covers the windows and door to provide rain protection. The swivel hub system describes the plastic hub which is mounted on the end of the main tent poles. Additional framing hooks into these hubs. Since the hubs swivel they absorb stress and distribute it through out the frame.
