Best Tent of My Life So Far

By Jess the Forager

from Chicago, IL, Forests everywhere

Pros

  • Bright and airy
  • Comfortable
  • Dry
  • Easy setuptakedown
  • Lightweight

Cons

  • Door has no full screen

Best Uses

  • Camping Hiking
  • Mountain

This tent is amazing!
We bought it shortly before a 10 day trip to the San Juan Mountains, Moab, and Black Hills Nat'l Forest.
Based on another user's review, I sealed the seams, both bottom and sides. That was 30 minutes of my life well spent, because that night it STORMED and stormed, yet we remained completely dry. Over the course of our trip it rained and rained even more, but not a drop got into the tent, even with the screen windows open, fly up.
Very cozy, stayed warm on cold nights, good ventilation. I would say it's more of a 2-3 person tent, though. 4 seems a bit tight.
The one and only downfall for me would be the lack of a screen door. I just love lying in bed and gazing out to see the mountains or campfire. But since it's the only tent I've ever had in 30+ years of camping that doesn't leak, I'll let it slide.

We got it for a family camping trip, and it did the job. It's relatively easy to set up and plenty big for a queen size air mattress (crucial for oldsters).
        The price is right.

Re Reviewing now it has had use!

          By Kodiak

          from Sussex County, NJ

          Pros

          • Easy setup
          • Sturdy Construction

          Cons

          • Have to reseal ALL stitch

          Best Uses

          • 2 person camping
          • Light for backpacking

Well, had a nice week of use now, my seals done before trip were GREATLY tested...they held well in a 5-1/2 inch downpour during 12 hours...BUT...the seal where the base floor is attached to sides leaked like a sieve, especially at the 4 pocket attachments. Fly offers great coverage for sides while the door and window areas are well exposed to the rain and the rain came through. Thankful was only one day of it and not much equipment was soaked as on a downhill slope so all water pooled at door. Still loved it, resealed now the whole seam it leaked through and hope next trip is dry and comfy!

          Best Uses

          • 3 People weekend
          • 4 People overnite NO GEAR

Setup as expected, SIMPLE! Being with a Scout Troop has numerous Kelty's, did not need directions but yes, READ them anyway! LOL
This will be my own Adult leader tent for camping trips so wanted the 4 person to simply gain extra space but surprised as it does not seem much larger than our 2 man tents for the scouts. Upon setup, the top hooks are supposed to hook on both poles at crossover but seemed a very stressful position for them, simply alternated them for now to hold. Aluminum poles show slight bend already from initial setup so not sure if this is standard for them, only dealt with fiberglass so far. The poles for the hoods are a great addition and held well for a setup, now to see how they hold in windy conditions. Problems I had were the floor needs to be seasled as it is a ribbon stitch, so bought a sealer which is great for ONCE around the tent, but have to do other side of ribbon now too!! My mistake I guess.
looking forward to a week of summer camp in it now and will review after that to update.

I don't quite understand one person's review. Review said that there was no screen door so I'd like some verification. Does the door have a screen in addition to the regular door? How about the windows-screens on them? Are the windows on the sides?

The Kelty Trail Dome 4 has a partial fabric door and net door. There is no zip down flap to expose more netting.

Specs say 8'3" x 7'1", but the drawing shows 80" on the short side which is only a little over 6 1/2'. Can you tell me which is actually correct?

              A:

The discrepancy is a function of usable internal space the 6.6' of the 80" wide dimension is use able interior space. The 7' 1" is overall material dimensions.
