    Horrible Smell

        Comments about Coghlan's Fire Sticks:

I bought several packs of these. The smell was unbelievable. I don't know what they make these things out of but unless you want a sickly sweet smell permeating everything - and I mean everything - in your pack, stay away from these fire starters. I made the mistake of packing some for an extended canoe trip and even though I put them in a Ziploc bag to contain the smell, the odor was absorbed by my food, my clothing, and every piece of gear I had. My hands reeked of the smell after handling them. Even a year later, I can detect the smell on my gear! I was in bear country and was worried that the smell would actually attract a bear. Fortunately that didn't happen. I had used these before and there was no odor, but they've changed something about the way they are made. I threw them all away. The only thing I can say good about them is that they do help start a fire.

          Comments about Coghlan's Fire Sticks:

I use these for 2 things: starting the fire in my wood stove (less creasote buildup) and for starting ceremonial fires. They always light, don't blow out in the wind, and last long enough to catch larger pieces of kindling.

            Comments about Coghlan's Fire Sticks:

While rideing on my motorcycle, doing interstate motorcycle tent camping and touring, I always carried a package of these with me.
When all others in the area couldn't get their wet wood to light, I had the only fire going.
Strange thing about it was, no one ever came over to ask me how I did it, when everyone else failed. :-)

              Comments about Coghlan's Fire Sticks:

I try to pack pretty light, but I always keep a stick of this in my emergency kit on any backpacking trip. Unless the wood is really wet, you don't even really need to use a full stick - I usually break it into thirds or quarters. That way, I can depend on having a fire for 3 or 4 nights on one stick. Love 'em and have used them for years.

These fire sticks lit even somewhat moist wood when I needed to get a wood stove going during the Northeast October storm and blackout. They were great!

Must have for survival pack! I was with friends doing the 7 Peaks of Peru in VT. Great hike into the Kingdom when a squall came in unexpected, the day was turning into night and it was getting cold and everything was wet...boy these sure helped out making the camp fire get started, I will always carry them with me when on day hikes, backpacking, or even river kayaking!
