This product works effectively and as advertised. That being said, I believe there are better products on the market nowdays. The magnesium bar is rather heavy for tinder and scraping enough to work with is time consuming. This isn't one of my go to items for backcountry use, but it is well priced and functional. I keep a few of them in vehicle survival kits.

I think this works great. Had my tinder bundle ready. Shaved off a small pile and had fire on the first strike. I have one in my pack and I am going to buy a second one to have a back up. I would and have recommended this fire starter.

This is my second mag fire starter. I use it quite frequently when snowshoeing or hiking. It works every time and practice makes perfect.

it was very easy to use. it lit a fire in about 1 to 2 try's. i had no trouble using it. the magnesium shaved off fairly easily and then lit with one try. i highly recommended it.

Thought this thing might make a good survival tool for firestarting. Don't waste your money. The magnesium is nearly impossible to shave off of the block. Tried several kinds of knives to do so. Very difficult to do. After almost an hour of work, a proper pile of magnesium shavings (and a couple of very dull knives) was produced. No matter what technique was tried, the pile of shavings could not be ignited by the striker on the side of the tool. A disappointing piece of gear. It will not find a place in my pack.
