  • Q:

What diameter pot will fit OK inside the wind screen, and what amount of water will it boil in the (stated) 6 minutes. Or, how much rice can it cook with one filling?

      A:

The Windscreen will be wider than 1.87" in diameter or 8.94" in circumference. The wind screen will adjust to a larger circumference. You can use a pop with a large diameter. The 6 minute boil time is for a quart or liter.

I am planning on backpacking thru part of Europe next year and want to camp some. How hard is it to find fuel for this stove? I'll be primarily in Spain, but may go to Portugal and France too. Thanks.

The Katahdin Alcohol Stove Kit can use any type of denatured alcohol. Its known as methylated spirits in Europe. Any hardware store in Europe will have a form of denatured alcohol.

As long as the amount of rice you are cooking is small this stove should work.

I am interested in one of the backpacking stoves that uses alcohol for fuel. What type of alcohol do you recommend? Do you need to use any special precautions?

Methyl Hydrate (methanol) is a great fuel for alcy stoves! 99.9% pure. It's the best! Get it at any paint department.

Denatured wood alcohol. You can get this at a local paint store.

    • A:

You can use Denatured Alcohol, yellow bottles of "Heet", or Grain Alcohol (more expensive).
Be aware that the flame will be very hard to see during daylight hours (better if you add a small pinch of salt to the fuel), and try not to spill/knock the stove over ;-)
