The Complete Guide to Edible Wild Plants

Item #: 11065

Our Price: $12.95

Anyone who has spent serious time outdoors knows that in survival situations, wild plants are often the only sustenance available. The proper identification of these plants can mean the difference between survival and death. This book describes habitat and distribution, physical characteristics, and edible parts of wild plants-the key elements of identification. Hugely important to the book are its color photos. There are over one hundred of them, further simplifying the identification of poisonous and edible plants. No serious outdoors person should ever hit the trail without this book and the knowledge contained within it.

Comments about W W Norton The Complete Guide to Edible Wild Plants:

Provides proper basic fundementals. Not a detailed guide for plant idenification. A reprint from the Army FM, A few pictures dated or b&w. Lacks detail I was looking for but still a exellent basic guide. I may be critical,I am retired military and former instructor. Would recommend as basic, if you have been to SERE or mountain warfare ect you have seen this already

Comments about W W Norton The Complete Guide to Edible Wild Plants:

Although this book is a reprint of a 'Department of the Army' manual, it's printed in China. Most of the pictures are printed a little dark and murky and many are not usable for identification (even as a second 'opinion', i.e using two or more field guides to confirm a plant's identification). I found the same exact pictures on-line that were much brighter and usable for identification.

There are many websites that contain the same pictures and information (word for word).

There are a couple minor typos that hint of Chinese proof readers and a picture of the batoko plum's fruit (page 27) is also incorrectly used a second time for identification of the burl palm (page 35).

Skyhorse Publishing is a newer, small niche publisher that has books on subjects of interest to me. I applaud them for this and want to purchase more of their books, but not on-line unless the country of printing is identified. Otherwise, I'll check them out at a book store first. The price of their books is reasonable, ***BUT*** I would be willing to pay a little more for books printed in the USA with better quality pictures and better proof reading.

This book is only good as an arm chair read to find plant(s) of interest then use other, better field guides to go out and actually find, identify and harvest those plants. The cover and pages are sturdy, good for the coffee table.
