I agree with the other reviewer about the upper part being less "beefy" than others of the same brand. I have to assume they're catering to AT hikers who primarily do the trail in the warm/hot months, thus don't want extra padding above the ankle to add to an already sweaty foot/boot.
Having said that, I'm an XL shoe-size but got the L and am glad I did bacause wool socks stretch out. I was afraid they'd be too "tight" but they aren't. In fact, they're even getting a hair loose now. So I'd recommend buying down one size, especially if you're on the borderline.

I was looking for something for winter and like the Darn Tough product line. However, I would probably not buy these again as the upper sock does not feel as wholesome as the lower styles do . . . the Darn Tough socks do not "pill" in the wash as the smart-woll, but, they they are not nearly as thick as the expedition trekers, which I had hoped they would be.
